Title: Dev Log #47: Announcing Underrail: Expedition
Post by: Styg on October 11, 2016, 01:13:36 pm
Hey guys,

It's been almost eight months since the last formal dev log. That doesn't mean we haven't been busy working on new stuff, however, and now at long last we can announce the first Underrail expansion - "Expedition".

(http://underrail.com/images/Expedition.png) (http://underrail.com/images/Expedition.png) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition1.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition1.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition2.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition2.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition3.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition3.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition4.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition4.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition5.jpg) (http://underrail.com/images/DevLog/Expedition/expedition5.jpg)

In Expedition you'll be able to take a break from the usual metro-crawling to take a boat to the infamous Black Sea, a massive underground body of water.

There, among the old and mysterious ruins of an age long past, you'll face the vicious fauna, hostile natives, cunning pirates, and something far more sinister than all of those.

Your voyage through vastness of the Black Sea will shed new light on the history of the world of Underrail and the forces that shaped it.

Expedition will feature the following:

Over time we'll be revealing more details through the dev log, so expect those to once again flow regularly as they did before the game's release.

We expect to release the expansion during the first half of 2017 as a paid DLC.

Yay, finally we get to see what blackwater is all about! No continuation of the main storyline yet, it seems. Just how many expansions have you planned already!? ;)

Also, what are your plans for Underrail updates? Will there be new patches to the base game once Expedition is released, or will future updates be through the expansion?

As many DLCs as we feel like, as long as it's profitable.

We will continue to release updates for the base game as well. In the next update, you'll find that, in addition to fixing bugs, we've done some improvements as well. But more on that in some future dev log. ;)

Bravo! Cannot wait!

So, we have to wait for North Underrail?

Happy to see the announcement finally drop. I was holding on to a sliver of hope that the expansion would come sooner, but the wait is now easier after having an idea of what's coming.

That's an amazing piece of news, thanks, Styg!

I see a lot of spiders on the artwork and screenshots. Please, please, please don't let us see too many of them. I know it may sound dumb and entitled, but hey, it's a real condition. I already had a lot of trouble finishing the main game because of that, I don't want it to taint my experience with the expansion too :(

Keep up the good work!

Words cannot express how beyond ridiculously excited I am about this expansion. I don't care about the price; an Underrail expansion is worth more than gold to me! :D
Everything looks stellar so far. Bravo, good sirs! Do continue! :)

Styg,

what are your current thoughts regarding:
a) length compared to the original game - 1/2, 1/4? My recommendation: keep it short (packed with content!) and sweet rather than too long!
b) Will the DLC improve the general game i.e. can we use the skills etc. to finish the original game? And vice-versa, can we finish the original game and then the DLC?
Would be cool to see a 'Blizzard style' expansion which really fits naturally with the base game (e.g. like Diablo 2 and LoD).

This is great news!

a. (copypasta from RPGCodex) Hard to tell at this point. The main quest of the DLC might not take that long to finish if you know what you're doing, but there will definitely be a lot of areas (over 100) to explore if you're into that.

b. You will be able to use the new mechanics while doing the old content, yes. The DLC will be a seamless part of the existing world. You can also do the new DLC content after finishing the original campaign, as long as you don't trigger the actual end-game sequence.

Styg,

Could you share some light on the level cap? I'm about 3 experience levels in after level 25. Will i automatically get those 3 levels or will my experience go down to level 25 and ill have to work my way up?

As well as is there an ETA on main story line expansion?

Thanks :)

I will never give ETA on anything ever again!

Good morning,

I was thinking to something: is it possible to play that extension if we didn't finish the game? For example, with a character blocked on Deep Cavern, will i be able to start the extension with my character?

If not, I guess I need to keep a save where I am still in the Tchortist Institute...?

Are you planning to make more use of the special stealth features in the Foundry prison (the "camera footage must be erased if detected or you're in trouble" kind of stuff) in the expansion? That was an interesting gimmick, yet the game doesn't really seem to use it anywhere else than in the Foundry, in that one specific location.

Hello Styg, i have a question about what you have said :
Quote
Your accumulated experience won't go to waste.

What will be the experience cap (not the level:) in the expansion. I ask because my character has accumulated a lot experience points (~75 000 XP, see screenshot) and i have the feeling that he will reach the new level cap (of the expansion) as soon as i will launch it. Would you, or could you be more specific on this subject ?

Nah, that would only get you about 2.5 levels on the current XP curve and veteran levels will require significantly more experience.
Thanks for the info epeli. I fear i will be frustated to begin the new expansion whitout enjoying level up as i progress.

where did you get those graphics mods? Looks pretty cool.
My own work epeli and far from being finished. Thanks for your nice word :)

If the devs are not hostile to this kind of modification, why not, even if for now it's far from accomplished.

That remains to be seen pending testing, so I can't give you a number right now. What I can say is that amount of XP required for veteran levels is substaintially greater than that for regular levels.

And indeed those are some nice graphics, but I can't help but wonder what the heck motivates you to redo all those assets?

Thanks Styg. I will definitely looking for this expansion, even if i was first a bit suspicious about the new veteran feats, i could be surprised ;)

Quote

It's some kind of tribute. I remeber when i first played the game how fascinated i was by the graphics and how good the atmosphere was. And some assets are just and truly amazing - how have you done some of them, i can"t imagine. And because i could do that i suppose :) It started as an exercice and grow up slowly, taking a lot of my time :) But it's fun and i learn a lot.

Sorry Mac Orion, not right now. I am not a professional. Maybe when i will be ready to distribute it.

Why not Yonaiker. I have not yet identified all the fonts used for the interface, and i need to contact authors beacause, even if they are freeware, i have edited them. And if the devs aren't against such modification. But i am facing a bug with these fonts - at leat one had introduced a crash when using the terminal at the SGS morgue.

@Stern

I used an xnb to png converter to get those .pngs out. But then you would also need a png to xnb converter to use them for the game again.
