I stand on it, I danced on it, licked it, anything else and... Nothing.
177 Detection and... NOTHING!

It locates near elevator, after you leave Deep Caverns

i also think their resemblence to the faceless medallion isnt a coincidence (blue circle with a cross through it)

If you really want a spoiler, I'm pretty sure it's a kind of teleportation/fast travel system.
