Title: Himiway: How to Ride an eBike on Sand

Riding an eBike on sand can be a lot of fun, but it is very different from riding on pavement or a normal dirt trail. Sand creates much more rolling resistance, reduces steering control, and can make even a powerful eBike feel slow.

The good news is that a properly equipped fat-tire eBike can handle many sandy conditions surprisingly well. The key is getting your tire pressure right, choosing the best line, maintaining momentum, and using motor assistance smoothly.

Here are some practical tips I've found useful for riding an eBike on sand.

1. Use Wide Tires

Tire width makes a huge difference on sand.

Narrow tires tend to cut into soft sand and sink, while fat tires spread the weight of the bike and rider across a larger surface area. For regular beach or loose-sand riding, tires around 3 to 4 inches wide or wider are generally much easier to manage.

This is one reason fat-tire eBikes such as the Himiway D5, D5 Pro, and D5 2.0 can make sense for mixed-terrain riding. The wider tires provide more flotation and stability when the surface becomes loose.

However, fat tires don't make an eBike immune to getting stuck. Very deep, dry sand can stop almost any bicycle.

2. Lower Your Tire Pressure

This is probably one of the biggest improvements you can make before entering sand.

Lower tire pressure allows the tire to flatten slightly against the ground, creating a larger contact patch. That helps the bike stay on top of the sand instead of digging into it.

As a general starting point:

Firm or packed sand: around 15–20 PSI
Soft or loose sand: around 8–12 PSI

These aren't universal numbers. The ideal pressure depends on your tire size, rider weight, bike weight, terrain, and the tire manufacturer's recommended pressure range.

Reduce pressure gradually rather than immediately going extremely low. Too little pressure can make handling vague and may increase the risk of rim strikes, tire damage, or burping on some tubeless setups.

I usually prefer starting slightly higher and dropping a little more pressure if the bike is still sinking.

3. Look for Firm, Packed Sand

Not all sand is equally difficult.

Dry, loose beach sand can require a huge amount of power. Damp, compact sand is usually dramatically easier.

If you're riding on a beach where cycling is permitted, the harder-packed area closer to the waterline at low tide can provide much better traction.

Just don't ride through the water itself.

Salt water is particularly bad for bicycle components, and an eBike has additional electrical parts that you definitely don't want submerged in seawater.

4. Keep Your Momentum

Momentum is your friend on sand.

Once you're moving at a comfortable speed, try to maintain it. Coming to a complete stop in deep sand often makes restarting much more difficult.

Pedal smoothly and look ahead for particularly soft sections.

If you see loose sand coming, prepare before you reach it rather than waiting until the bike starts bogging down.

At the same time, don't confuse momentum with speed. You don't need to ride extremely fast. A moderate and consistent pace is usually easier to control.

5. Shift Into an Easier Gear Before Soft Sand

Don't wait until you're halfway through a difficult section before shifting.

Before entering deep sand, shift into a lower mechanical gear so you can maintain a comfortable cadence without putting excessive load on the drivetrain.

Then combine that gear with an appropriate pedal-assist level.

This is especially useful with heavier fat-tire eBikes. A powerful motor helps, but good gear selection still matters.

Using the correct gear reduces the amount of work required from both your legs and the motor.

6. Use Pedal Assist Smoothly

Sand is one situation where higher pedal assistance can genuinely be useful because rolling resistance is so much greater than on pavement.

But more power isn't always better.

If you suddenly apply maximum throttle or motor power in very loose sand, the rear tire can spin instead of pushing you forward. Once it starts spinning, it can dig itself deeper into the sand.

I find it much easier to gradually increase assistance while continuing to pedal.

The goal is smooth, continuous power.

Models with strong torque and wide tires, such as some Himiway D5 and D7 configurations, can be useful on difficult surfaces, but technique still makes a major difference. Even a powerful eBike can get buried if you repeatedly spin the rear wheel.

7. Make Wide, Gentle Turns

Sharp steering inputs don't work particularly well in loose sand.

If you turn the handlebars aggressively, the front tire may dig into the surface or slide sideways.

Instead:

Look where you want to go.
Keep your upper body relaxed.
Make gradual steering corrections.
Use wider turns whenever possible.

Don't fight every small movement of the front wheel. Some wandering is normal when riding through sand.

8. Keep Your Weight Balanced

Your riding position also affects traction.

Try to stay relatively centered and relaxed on the bike. If the rear wheel starts losing traction, shifting your weight slightly backward may help.

However, don't lean excessively backward because that can make the front wheel too light and reduce steering control.

The best position changes depending on whether you're riding through hard-packed sand, deep sand, or climbing a sandy slope.

A stable bike geometry and wide tires can help here. For example, the compact Himiway D5 2.0 20" may appeal to riders who prefer a lower, more manageable riding position, while larger-wheel fat-tire models can feel more natural when maintaining momentum over longer stretches of uneven terrain.

9. Expect Much Less Battery Range

Don't plan a sand ride using your normal pavement range.

Sand creates considerably more rolling resistance, so the motor has to work harder. Low tire pressure, higher pedal-assist settings, frequent acceleration, wind, and soft terrain can all increase battery consumption.

For example, if your eBike normally gives you plenty of remaining battery after a particular distance on pavement, don't assume you'll have the same reserve after riding that distance on a beach.

Start with a fully charged battery and leave yourself a generous safety margin for the return trip.

I would rather finish a beach ride with 30% battery remaining than discover several miles from the starting point that I underestimated how much energy the sand would consume.

10. Know When to Get Off and Walk

Sometimes the smartest riding technique is not riding.

Extremely deep, powdery sand can be almost impossible to cross efficiently, especially with a heavy eBike.

If the rear wheel keeps spinning and digging deeper, stop applying power. Continuing to use the throttle usually makes the hole worse.

Get off, push the bike to firmer ground, and start again.

There's no benefit in overheating the motor or draining a large amount of battery trying to ride through a short section that you could walk across in a minute.

11. Check Whether eBikes Are Allowed

Before riding on a beach, dune, coastal trail, or protected area, check the local regulations.

Access rules vary considerably. A beach may allow bicycles but restrict certain classes of eBikes. Some areas prohibit bikes completely during particular seasons or times of day, while environmentally sensitive dunes may be permanently off-limits.

Don't assume that seeing tire tracks means riding there is legal.

12. Clean the Bike After Riding Near Salt Water

This is one of the most important parts of beach riding.

Salt and sand are a terrible combination for a bicycle.

Fine sand can work its way into the drivetrain, brakes, bearings, and other moving components. Salt accelerates corrosion.

After a beach ride, I would recommend cleaning the bike as soon as practical.

Use fresh water to remove salt and loose sand from appropriate external surfaces, but avoid blasting high-pressure water directly into the motor, battery connections, display, bearings, or other electrical components.

Then dry the bike thoroughly.

Pay particular attention to:

Chain
Cassette
Chainring
Brake rotors
Derailleur
Bolts and exposed metal parts

After the drivetrain is clean and dry, lubricate the chain according to the lubricant manufacturer's instructions.

Also inspect the brake rotors carefully and keep chain lubricant away from them.
