Title: Wearing Rathound Regalia turning Hathor _permanently_ hostile feels like a bug.
Post by: Tamior on January 11, 2019, 01:50:10 am
I understand the intent here (guard mistaking you for the rathound king and attacking), but the fact that they REMAIN PERMANENTLY hostile even if you quietly disengage (without harming anyone) and come back later via a boat (without the regalia) just feels like an oversight.

Perhaps they don't mistake you for the King, but rather assume that you're allied with him (why else would you be wearing that nonsense?) and put wanted posters up all over town with your mug on it.  Then, they know what you look like and remember your face.

Rathound King at that point has a truce with Camp Hathor, so officially declaring someone an enemy for being an ally of the guy you have peace truce with.... make even less sense.

I, uh...I may have forgotten there was a peaceful solution to that quest.  Not saying I kill everything in UnderRail, but the term "murderhobo" does sort of apply.

If we weren't meant to kill NPCs, then why are they made of loot?

I never went the "truce" path with rathound King so i'll just ask a question :

Have both parties agreed on free movement on their respective territories, or is it only a non agression pact with no trespassing allowed ?

It's a non-aggression pact, mostly.
However, the PLAYER getting attacked for just approaching Camp Hathor with regalia equipped still brings the same issue:
- if player is simply mistaken for Rathound King and attacked by a trigger-happy guard, then the hostilities should end once the player clearly shows he/she is NOT the Rathound King.
- if the locals are aware of the fact player is NOT the Rathound King, why exactly do they keep attacking? Wearing an attire similar to that of a guy you have a non-aggression pact with is hardly a crime in and of itself.

It was always strange to see permanent hostility trigger because you misclicked on a mindshroom or something, I feel something like that should pass after certain amount of time or quest progression.

Perhaps a solution could be to force dialogue with someone, they would say something along the lines of 'stop that! Those are mine, give them back' with an option to comply or attack (or maybe even persuade). Then you know you made a mistake but don't accidentally end an ironman run

Hostility triggering is rather harsh and if I was implementing it now I would do things differently, but at this point it would just be way too much work, so it is what it is.

But would it really be all that much work to add a cool-down that would revert aggression after X minutes for "minor" crimes?
Maybe as part of expedition release?

Yes.  The answer to that question is always yes. "Just add a toggle" is one of the best ways to start a fight with a programmer.

As part of my job, I write software for hardware integration (LabView) and data analysis (Matlab, Python, etc), and every so often I'm asked to "just add a toggle'. Depending on the code structure, pretty often it is, in fact, easy. Granted, I haven't seen UnderRail source code, but my default assumption (from seeing source codes of other open-code turn-based games) would be that there is a fair chance it's not that complicated of a change.

In this case it would. Any half-assed attempt to quickly change the way the faction hostility works would result in bunch of broken quests, hilarious exploits and messed up saves - I guarantee it.
