Heavy guns really shine once you hit the mid-game and unlock the better feats like Suppressive Fire. Ammo weight is a pain early on, so I always grab the Pack Rat feat or keep a mule companion nearby. The damage output against mechanical enemies makes the logistics headache totally worth it.
