General / What actually is/are the Gray Army?

I'm not actually anywhere near interacting with them yet, but what is the Gray Army's role/purpose? Are they hostile? Can they be joined? They sure have a banging music theme.

If the answer(s) are potentially too spoiler-y, just let me know. I just can't help but to be intrigued by them.

Builds / Taking this spear+shield build and using a sword instead

I was wondering how I could take the current build I'm using (http://underrail.info.tm/build/?Eg4GBgYDAwYAZABkAAAASUkAAGRkFDpkAAAAAAAATDnCgsKVwq8GwpTCrMKqS8KTJt-_) and just replace the spear with a sword. What sort of perks would be optimal? Keep in mind, I'd still like to avoid Psi usage. I just want to get in their face and hack away, basically.
