General / Re: how the hell do I get through this [spoiler i guess]
« on: July 25, 2020, 07:55:57 pm »
If you are too low level, this quest will be extremely difficult. I wait until L12 or so before trying it. If you're at L9 or something it's going to be pretty hard.

Reloading before the warp might be a good idea. Just don't try to play from a save where you used up your first Juice without going through the warp, I think you're screwed if you do that.

If you have reasonable stealth (maybe 100 counting gear, idk exactly) and either 85 or 90 effective lockpicking you can pretty much stealth and use vents to get your way through with no fights and no uniform shenanigans. This is easy once you know what to do (will require more experimentation the first time) and is the way I usually do it.

You can also wear the uniforms and get around the base pretty effectively. Any character should be able to get the basic uniform in the locker in the southeast room in the first zone. With a uniform male characters should be able to bluff their way out of some interactions even with 0 persuasion, but not all interactions. However, you can also use the uniforms kind of like stealth, allowing you to be in view of the soldiers as long as you don't get close enough to trigger the dialogs.

Bugs / Re: Can't update to 1.1.2.1 on GOG + Harland quest
« on: July 25, 2020, 04:38:38 pm »
Same issue, GOG version is broken.

GOG claims that 1.1.2.1 is the version that's installed--there's a separate radio button for it and everything--but the actual installed version is 1.1.2.0.

I tried fiddling and updating and reinstalling and nothing gets me to 1.1.2.1 from GOG. I think they have 1.1.2.0 incorrectly labeled as 1.1.2.1.

Mephi, you're responding to a post from 2015. Some things have changed since then.

I seem to recall someone saying you can get a rumor from Kareem about Silent Isle and after that Broderick will take you there even if you sided with Scrappers. Worth a try.

If you have the expansion, you can certainly get to Silent Isle on a jet ski.

General / Re: [Spoiler] Stuck after complete Dude's quest
« on: September 26, 2019, 07:13:59 pm »
Yes, there is a way out that works without TNT. You'll end up at the train stop for Rail Crossing. This exit is to the southwest of Dude's cave home.

It may be a little tricky to get there without getting killed. I think you want to go mostly west and then south, but I'm pretty sure going immediately west from Dude's cave home leads to a cave that is very likely to get you killed. You don't want that one. Don't get eaten by crawlers, man.

If you find a ford across a river that is guarded by psi beetles you're on the right track, just get over on the west side of the river and go a couple zones south and you're out. There's some interesting stuff on the west side of that river that you'll want to see and may come back to again.

Actually, I think there's another way out, but I never go that way. I think if you go NORTH from Dude's cave you'll (immediately? eventually?) find a patch of rocks that you can climb up into the tunnel system, and from there you could find your way back to Core City or Foundry eventually.

Either way could get you hopelessly lost or killed, but I suspect looking for the Rail Crossing exit is probably easier.

Oh well, it looks like another decent run goes straight into a bin.

Possibly this is just exaggerated disappointment, but in case you're actually confused: the shard is just a fun little extra. It's not necessary or even important. It's kinda cool, but you can forget about it, go on with your run, and pick it up some other game.

Yeah, I saw two with Marty the last time I was there. Haven't been watching, could have been more at times. Definitely still in the game, although I am familiar with the pain of seeing them only when you don't need them.

I see, well i must say i do take a lot of damage in different ways, especially in expedition, so my high con do serve me to avoid a lot of deaths, but i understand it's because i'm bad at the game according to you :)

Mediocre Underrail players of the world unite!

Some of the people who post here could probably do CON 3 + psi health on DOMINATING and hardly get killed at all. Me, I'm not on that level.

Glad to see your comment about mines, i really don't get how you can avoid dying this way early on.

I don't mind reloading in general but to reload in order to avoid a trap you can't detect feels really cheesy to me...

Upping your detection to catch them like Mindless describes ought to work. I'm not actually doing this, but I should. (I don't think I've seen a blast cloth yet though.)

I'm mostly using molotovs as mine sweepers . . . but not perfectly. I've played Depot A so many times I thought I knew where they all were, but it's been a while, and I was wrong.

i see everyone sharing 3 con psi builds nowadays, can you really not bother at all with health ?

Depends on how good you are, and how much dying bothers you.

If you are good enough or prepared enough you may be able to face combat after combat taking no damage or next to no damage.

Or, you can experiment your way to the no/low damage scenario by reloading as many times as needed. I think a lot of people play this way. I used to. It's fun to go all in on offense.

But if you are playing CON 3, and with the psi health tax to boot, there is very little margin for error. You'd better be very good or willing to reload. Don't complain if you die! (some people do)

I'm playing CON 5 with psi, trying not to die, and have still died 4 or 5 times (twice to mines, ugh) and have gotten down under 10 HP at least 3 times. If I was playing CON 4 or 3 I would certainly have died more. Another point of CON (i.e. 6 CON) probably would have saved me at least one fatality, maybe more.

Builds / Re: Machetes and You!

I'm finding Flurry underwhelming. The only things I can reliably Flurry are wimpy things. At L9 (maxed melee) I'm fairly likely to miss once flurrying a Rathound Alpha. Pfft.

At L9 I think machetes are not as strong as a good knife build. This is good for balance, we wouldn't want knives to be obsolete, but I admit I was expecting more. Maybe later when I get more DEX I'll get my chipper shredder going. (Or maybe the idea is I need to do more to debuff my targets. Or maybe the difference in weapon damage will tell more later in the game.)

Don't get me wrong, Flurry is still fun, but don't set your expectations too high.

On the other hand, Temporal Manipulation + Grenadier is freaking awesome. My character is getting along just fine despite the limitations of Flurry.

Also, "fast attack speed"; machetes are not light weapons if that's what you were thinking.

Doh, that is what I was thinking, thanks.

High str only increases your damage by like 1/7th or 1/8th at max level; not worth it.  The only other benefit is carry weight.  High dex gives you crit chance and initiative, as well as bonuses to many skills.

If what I saw in that old old devlog is still correct, swords get a bonus of 7% per point of STR over 6. So, assuming 18 STR, (18 - 6) -> 12 x 7% -> 84% damage bonus. Almost double damage by end game.

Am I misunderstanding something? That's how I thought STR worked when I played a sledgehammer character too (the numbers were different with sledges of course).

Being able to wear metal armor is a nice option that high STR characters have.

That said, I agree with your other points about DEX. Crit chance is particularly significant. I see other pluses around fast attack speed. I guess I'm going to rethink.

You can persuade lucas to give you one at the start, or you can just buy one from him like I did.  I went to Blaine over a dozen times in the early game and I never saw a single tichrome bar; I had to wait until foundry.  That said, for flurry, you want a curved tungsten machete (assuming your crit chance is good, otherwise a straight tungsten), since it has a set AP cost.

Ah, that's great. Machetes from the get-go.

I'm not counting on an early TiChrome at all. I've had it happen, but I think it's pretty rare. I might semi-rush Foundry, though.

Thanks for the tip about Flurry. I like the image of a dude with a TiChrome machete in one hand and a tungsten one in the other.

Somewhere I heard there was a katana; did you find it? (definitely not asking for spoilers if you did, just if you did or not)

Oh man. So many good feats with swords. Which awesome thing do I want soonest?

So your killer build goes high DEX. I was thinking high STR. Obviously there's pluses to both--is there a strong reason you prefer high DEX?

Yeah, swords seem to want high crit. I was thinking to take Recklessness as a starting feat.

Was Riposte lots of fun? It seems kind of cool, but you have to take Parry to get it and it's another feat that only works if you're blocking melee. Still, if it's super fun, that's an argument for it.

Is it easy to get swords going from the beginning of the game? I thought it might take a while before you could get rolling with them. (Another playthrough where I'm hoping for an early TiChrome bar.)

Five. More. Days.

Heh, I'm also intending a swordfighter with Temporal Manipulation. Seems to be a common choice. My next char (yeah I'm already planning the second playthrough), I'm thinking a shotgun/sniper character, also with TM.

My slasher is some similar to HarperFan's, although I intend to max STR and have 6 CON, some different emphasis, but many of the same feats. Oh man, I had forgotten Escape Artist. Maybe I can squeeze one more stat point to put in DEX. That would also open up Quick Tinkering . . .

So about riot armor + shield, it's clear that RA is getting some love, and I originally thought I wanted to play a sword and board character. But while sword and shield (or spear and shield) seem kind of cool, it's still just defense against melee attacks, right? IDK. Death stalkers are scary, sure, and having them go thud thud thud instead of stab stab stab would be cool, but there's a lot of other types of attacks that can kill you. And this character, if needed, could strap into full metal armor anyway.

Now if Riot Armor shields are getting changed so they help against ranged attacks, that's a whole nother story. I'm guessing not, though. I suppose those who know can't comment. I'll find out soon enough.

General / Re: Can't figure out what to do next / Am I underleveled?

Is this your first time through? If so, you can expect a lot of punishment from DOMINATING. It's really not a difficulty for new players.

Still, you're pretty far along, so perhaps you can carry on. Hard to say for sure. L 14 is where you're likely to get a kick-ass feat for your build (e.g. Locus of Control for psi users) and that's likely to make a difference in tough fights.

Once you get out of Junkyard there's a ton of XP to be picked up (I'm assuming Oddity here). You can hit at least L 14, probably L 15 without completing any major quest lines. You've done quite a few quests already, so my guess is you just haven't explored that much, or maybe you didn't fully loot the stations you've been to. Have you explored at all in Lower and Upper Underrail outside of the stations? There are certainly fights there that will end with you being devoured, but there's also quite a bit of XP to be picked up.

If you do Jack's Lenox Pierce and Ohad Xander quests, those are pretty safe and will hand you some XP--not a whole lot, I don't think, but if you're close to leveling, you could look at these. (oh, i see you did Ohad already, nevermind)  The next step of Camp Hathor is one of the easier ones of the others you've got shown.

But my main advice if you want to level would be to explore some more.
