General / Current state of crossbows
« on: August 19, 2017, 10:27:45 pm »
I recently loaded up my old crossbow character to see how it fared in the game's current build, and was surprised by how effective it was, in fact I've been breezing through most of the game with it. Crossbows seem much, much better than they used to be and much stronger than e.g. chemical/energy pistols presently are. Anyone played all the way through with crossbows in recent builds who can tell me whether their old foes are still nigh undefeatable? I've had some trouble already with bladelings/dreadnoughts (which I was nonetheless able to brute force my way past by machinegunning shock bolts), but I'm interested in whether industrial bots/deep worms and particularly the big bad are still as much of a brick wall for crossbows as they once were, or if they're now easier to overcome.

Is there any way to modify the dialogues? For that matter, can the .k files in the knowledge directory be read/modified? I can't find any information on this anywhere.

There are a couple of mostly-functional udlg editors on teh internets, but you may need to leave the anglosphere to find them, as they are made by french and russian translators.

May I ask why you want to modify the knowledge files?
Similar reasons for why I'm interested in modifying udlg files - typo correction/general small time game tweaking options. (Well, I assume the .k files include item descriptions and the like, anyway, for all that they're wholly unreadable when compiled.)

It's suboptimal because Oculus loses a valuable agent if you do it this way. Has nothing to do with who you talk to or whether you're seen. They pretty much tell you that killing him is a last resort.

Cool, thank you very much for making this.

Crossbow has penalty to hit at point blank, like rifle. You want to attack from mid/long range. Also crossbow is silent, you use this to advantage by attacking lone enemies from stealth, killing them and then going away to sneak again, repeat.

The build given above leaves skills I would suggest taking ASAP until later than I would take them - if you take Snipe at level 6, Depot A is easy to run and gun through. You will probably have to carry many traps and spam them instead.

Only time I've ever carried more than one armor piece was the first time I did DC, where I lugged around a biohazard suit for a bit. Never carry around stuff like TNT or jackhammer unless I know I need it either, weighs too much. Even on feat-light builds I've never bothered with Pack Rathound and always prioritise stuff like Nimble instead. 130 weight has always seemed like way more than necessary to me unless you absolutely must loot everything. I rarely loot anything after Junkyard myself unless it's a piece of equipment to replace something I'm already wearing... selling loot in this game is just a chore and quests give you more than enough cash to buy everything you need anyway.

Batteries are like 5 weight for 50 which is way more than you actually need to carry anywhere ever, meds weigh practically nothing unless you're trying to carry hundreds of hypos for some reason... what can I say, I never seen the need to carry tons of stuff in Underrail.

There is one problem with them. Equipped in your utility slots they're are limited to stacks of 5 max.

???

Concussive shots - It's awesome actually and would be my next choice if I could fit it in but there are more important feats.

Pack Rathound is more important than Concussive Shot? I never had issues with carry weight with my crossbowman. I didn't carry dozens of traps around either though, only used them in difficult fights that couldn't win with crossbow alone.

Degrade rate seems to be a little high for my taste.
I hate this so much with crossbows. Can barely get through two combats without having to cram repair kits. WTF? Are they that powerful that they need to degrade so much faster than guns? (no. no they aren't)

General / Re: Pistols versus SMGs

On the other hand I always ended up using SMGs most of the time over pistols, specially when you get access to high caliber ones.
Same... and this was without Spec Ops and with a bunch of pistol feats.  :(

SMGs are just plain better IMO. Huge balance discrepancy between SMG and pistol. Felt very disappointed when I realised that any build specialising in pistols could do much much better using SMGs.

But if I wanted a weapon without investing lot of stats or feat into it it wouldn't be pistol IMO. Nor SMG.

Without Spec Out, SMGs are nothing else then crappy Assault Rifles.
Not true. I played a pistol specialist without Spec Ops and still ended up using SMGs half the time. Even without Spec Ops, Burst has no cooldown and does massive damage.

In single shot fire, pistols beat SMG.
Also not true. QL 50 7.62mm Hammerer with no DEX = 2 shots = 20-62 damage per round. QL 50 7.62mm Steel Cat with no DEX = 3 shots = 24-72 damage per round. SMGs pull further ahead with a rapid reloader. Further still with adrenaline. Pistols shine in high damage per single shot, but this doesn't apply to low calibers, where you're pretty much always better off with a SMG.

As for comparing pistols to snipers, pistols do not need STR and can make a use of Rapid Fire feat, thus .44 pistol can get 3 attacks in round if necessary. Plus they are working fine when moving around or when at point blank. Also, energy and chemical weapons are also pistols, as well as crafting only electrical pistol.
Dragunov has no strength requirement either. When moving around or at point blank you use SMG. Rapid Fire is an advantage a .44 has over a Dragunov, true. Laser/chemical pistols never do competitive damage for low DEX characters as far as I can tell, maybe chemical pistols might be useful for proc effects? Though if you're dabbling in pistols then whatever you're specialising in is probably going to be better for CC.

SMG doesn't need either Spec Ops or high DEX to beat out pistols at equal levels. Even with PER 6 and no other investment besides Guns, an SMG is much more useful than a pistol. Best exemplified by the start of the game with a pistol character, where you're always better off using an SMG.

Pistols have .44s available. But without DEX these are just crappy short range sniper rifles and inferior to Dragunov. Can't even shoot twice with a Rapid .44 unless you have 6 DEX.  :-\

Concussive Shots is very good, it procs often and enemies affected by it take +15% Opportunist damage.

Recklessness is a good perk but if you find yourself relying on crit chance bonuses too much with this character then you most likely aren't making use of traps frequently enough to have taken Deadly Snares, so one or the other.

I've never seen this but it must be a bug or something going on that you aren't realising (maybe you're eating eel sandwiches sometimes).

SMGs are much better than pistols in every way, yes. At all levels of expenditure.

You can take evasion and dodge if you want. Should have enough skill points to spread around crafting if you're maxing out crossbow, dodge, evasion, stealth and bumping traps as much as necessary.

Kneecap Shot isn't really necessary as Concussive Shots can trigger on any attack and you have serrated bolts for bleeding, consider something else. Opportunist, Trap Expert, Nimble are all useful.

I've never taken Ambush but it might be fantastic for all I know... you do have incendiary bolts.
