General / Re: Help with my last trait
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:59:54 pm »
I have no idea what the right choice for you is, but here's my thoughts on some of the traits you mentioned.

Grenadier sounds like a nice damage supplement if you can craft, but your post doesn't exactly make that clear and I assume you can't for whatever reason.
Otherwise I agree that it's really not worth it for grenades you find.

Expertise can be a nice damage supplement even with crit build. It is added at the very end though, so it doesn't get taken into the crit damage multiplier. Still, 25 extra damage on very fast attacks is not to be scoffed at imo. This would be my choice if I had no idea what to pick. I have never finished DC with a knife build though.

Remember that Opportunist gives 15% increased damage on slowed or snared targets as well, not just 25% on stun. And with cheap shots at the very least it is a 15% chance for 25% bonus damage on one attack. But yeah, that's nothing to write home about really.

Power Management would probably not be my choice for a last talent to help you with boss fight. I can get behind your reasoning for it though.

I have no idea about whether or not Eviscerate is a good choice.

General / Re: Bilocation Confirmed - 4 Will
« on: January 11, 2017, 05:15:20 pm »
You can get Bilocation on your character with 4 Will, the Tchortist Noble robe, and Junkyard Surprise spamming for the +2 Will. Or 5 Will and Junkyard Surprise. Or 6 Will and the Robe, with the required 35 Thought Control. Unknown if equipment will allow forgoing the 35 Thought Control requirement currently, but suspected.

Iirc learning psionic skills require a set base skill number, not effective skill. I.e. if you have 35+ effective skill but less skill points invested, it doesn't work, at least for skills offered by the teachers in SGS, and I think psionic mentors as well. Unsure if this applies to pillars. I seem to recall that it does, though.

Merchants work like this: Merchants will only buy the same kind of stuff from you that they sell, and when you open the barter window, there's text at the top that lets you know what items they are willing to buy and how many. Merchants refresh their inventory (and the amount and kind of stuff they are willing to buy) about every hour or so. This is one of many good reasons to play underrail using speedhack. Just google Cheat Engine.

If you want EMP nades, those are electronic equipment. You buy them from people who sell electronics, who are located in the engineering section of SGS. You also find two EMP grenades in the same section you encounter robots in the GMS compound. Your bulletproof vest is good against robots. It makes them deal as little damage to you as you do to them basically.

You might also want to try to use higher caliber firearms, since both robots and azuridae have fairly high damage thresholds.

Underrail is a game that is designed to have challenging combat from the very start, so don't feel too discouraged. It doesn't get all that much harder. At least not with a build as decent as yours.

To my knowledge I don't believe his real name is mentioned elsewhere.
If you read the original report in the west wing of the institute of Tchort, you will see that it is written by one "Aiden Travers". If you ask him for his real name he will tell you to read the original report.

However, as far as Eidein goes, I'm leaning more and more towards him simply being Vovin. It would explain why he's wearing a mask (burnt face), and it also falls into a very common storytelling technique used with very resourceful villains.

Biocorp is somehow destroyed or destabilized (I can't remember if we're ever told how and why, but it might be Vovin orchestrating it through the creation of Tchort), and Vovin disappears entirely.
He later re-emerges as part of the plan with a new identity(Aiden Travers), and "discovers" Tchort, and founds Tchortism. Why he does this I don't know. Perhaps simply as a coup to be the one in absolute power for the next part of the plan (some shit involving the cube). I'm also having thoughts about Ezra and why he is stationed in SGS in particular, when Tanner ends up trying to steal the cube, but this part is clouded so far.

Then the player meets Eidein, and we have the classic storytelling trope where the protagonist is aquainted with the antagonist and they share civil discourse and mutual admiration, without knowing each others' identity. After this the invasion happens and Eidein is killed(appearently), only to have his body disappear later on. This could be him surviving death a second time by escaping into the shadows, and only time will tell what events he will attempt to orchestrate next.

I realize a lot of this is far-fetched, but besides my probably poor memory of the storyline of events and such, I don't see the Kirill Gavrylyuk = Aiden Travers as being too far-fetched.
There's also the possibility of Vovin/Kirill not being the first identity of this man/entity as well. There could be a deeper mythos behind all this.

If I remember correctly, there are some pretty strong implications for Dude being one of the people you read the chatlogs of in Caerus Residential in DC, but I can't remember who exactly atm.
There is two guys in particular who are friends. You can find one of them as a mutant in the Caerus Vents if you have high enough perception. Dude might be the other guy, which iirc, was a heavy drinker.

Well shit...

Now all we need is to find the "Black Arrow" and everyone can be happy... I think.

Somebody did find the Black Arrow. It's actually pretty well known where it is by now.  ;)

So... I have been a busy bee and didn't have the time to play Underrail but I have fooled around with the character creator.
I realized my perfect character would actually look like this.

It's a stealthy psi thief with good social skills that can spot traps and secrets around him.
Obviously not balanced but would it be possible to finish the game with it on normal difficulty?

If not, any tips on how to tweak it or is it hopeless?

I really don't want to change 7 Per with Snooping.
Also want maximum hacking and lockpicking skills, so Dex has to stay at 4.
Also want to pass persuasion / intimidation checks.

The rest can be changed.

My experience will full psi build is that it is never hopeless, almost regardless of what you do with it. There are some stuff in there that I don't understand the reasoning behind though, such as Nimble feat with agility at 3 and no points in dodge/evasion. If you think that build looks cool though, it should work. My first full playthrough was with full psionics, and it was for the most part a breeze.

Quick tinkering is to set traps fast, i.e. bear trap to stop the bigger nastier enemies from getting to you.
Lockpicking and the like only needs to be around 120 in the parenthesis by the way. In case you thought he meant 120 points, which gives about 180 adjusted skill in your spreadsheet, which is afaik way, way higher than any lock in the game requires (think the highest ones are 130 or 135).

I will assume that you are playing on normal.

Yes, I am playing on normal.

Armor penalty reduces your dodge, evasion, stealth and movement points directly proportional to how high it is (not sure what the exact formula is). So lower armor penalty is better, but armor with lower armor penalty also offers less damage reduction, and herein lies the problem you will have to figure out.

Can't I just carry two armour suits around and swap when necessary? Also, I am planning on taking stealth (Interloper) and movement (Sprint, Hit and Run, Suppressive Fire) feats to be able to just run away from tough situations.
Yes, you can do that, but the main point here is that for a stealthy low con character there is no point in using armor with high armor penalty, since it reduces your dodge/evasion as well in combat. So if you go for the dodge/evasion agility route of defense you want to use lighter armor, but that means you actually have to put skill points into dodge and evasion. That was the main point.  :)

Normally you either go for high health or high dodge/evasion. However, the latter will spread you thin on skillpoints, which is a major concern since you say you want to go with guns, throwing, stealth, several other subterfuge skills, crafting AND talking skills.

Well, Guns would go to the max. Throwing - maybe 25 points or so. Subterfuge more or less to the max. Persuasion maybe up to 50 or 75. Crafting - I am planning on picking 2, at most 3 sciences. Mechanical and chemistry for guns, bullets and nades/mines. Then maybe some electrical or tailoring but probably not. I have no idea how high I need to raise them, I was just planning to explore the game and see.
Alright, just keep in mind that with dodge and evasion thrown in that's another 10 skill points used each level. Keep in mind that a throwing skill of 25 is actually really low. You usually have to boost stuff quite a bit in this game due to scaling, and while throwing works a bit differently at least in regards to grenades, leaving a stat at 25 points for the rest of the game usually (not always, though) means 25 wasted skill points.

If your plan is stealthy gunslinger, I would consider something like this:

Str 3
Dex 10 (extra points go here every time unless you have a well thought out reason for not doing so)
Agi 10
Con 3
Per 4
Will 3
Int 7

I was thinking more about a stealthy thief with guns but I guess you could call it that way?
I am a bit surprised I would need 16 Dex though, do I really? If I went up to 14 and just put the other 2 points wherever, would my build suffer a lot?
No, you don't need 16. It's more a matter of where else do you need it more. The AP cost decrease of SMG/pistol/knife attacks that dexterity gives is not to be scoffed at. But by all means, it's fully possible to finish the game with a build far less focused and min-maxy than that.

If you want to discard all of this build advice and just take a single piece of advice, the most important I can give is: Don't spread yourself thin. This is a game for specialists, not jack-of-all-trades.

Is being an excellent thief with excellent gun skills and then a bit of persuasion and some crafting already too much?

That depends entirely on if you're cool with being subpar in any of those skills. In my experience, as long as you have solid defense (you will have this with max dodge/eva, decent agility and low armor penalty) and solid offense (you will have this with high dex and light weapon of your choice+nades) you can kinda do whatever you want, but as mentioned earlier, 25 points in something is just gonna feel like you wasted those points when you reach higher levels.

And I saw you ask earlier in the thread whether there will be situations in this game where combat is unavoidable: Yes.
Well technically you wrote "rely on stealth", but there are situations where you can't do that either. Those are rarer though, depending on exactly what you mean by relying on stealth. Basically you have to fight sometimes.

General / Re: Is my build hopeless? (minor spoilers)
« on: November 21, 2016, 09:21:47 pm »
Just to narrow it down a little...

It would start as:
Str 3
Dex 8
Agl 6
Con 3
Per 10
Will 4
Int 6

I would go for max Guns, just a bit of Throwing, a lot of Subterfuge skills, some tech (to craft silenced guns and maybe bullets and maybe grenades). Also Persuasion and maybe some Mercantile if I have any points left. So it would be a thief but using (silenced) pistols and (silenced) SMGs instead of crossbows. Maybe even chemical pistols. Would ignore assault rifles and sniping, no strength to wield those. Also planting traps and mines before the battle, using nades on groups of enemies and flashbangs to stun and retreat.

As for the feats, I am not sure but would probably go with Expertise, Packrat, Aimed shot, Spec ops, Commando. And whatever else to become more mobile and sciency-crafty.

Would this give me enough firepower to go through the game? Also, another fragile character but I am hoping that stealth, high initiative, extra movement and such would keep me alive. Lots of hiding, hit and run.

Looks good on paper but then I thought the same thing with crossbows...

I would go heavier on the minmaxing, especially if this is your first character(and difficulty level is also relevant here, but I will assume that you are playing on normal). Here are some of my thoughts as a presumably average-skilled Underrail gamer with a few characters and 200 hours under my belt:

If you want a stealthy pistol/SMG build you don't need 10 perception by a long shot. What you want on the other hand, is to max out dexterity, because dexterity decreases action point cost of firing pistols, SMG's and knives. I would also look at what your defense is going to be, because there will be a point in the game where you will get attacked, regardless of your skill at subterfuge.

To start this off, let's talk a bit about armor penalty:

Armor penalty reduces your dodge, evasion, stealth and movement points directly proportional to how high it is (not sure what the exact formula is). So lower armor penalty is better, but armor with lower armor penalty also offers less damage reduction, and herein lies the problem you will have to figure out.
Normally you either go for high health or high dodge/evasion. However, the latter will spread you thin on skillpoints, which is a major concern since you say you want to go with guns, throwing, stealth, several other subterfuge skills, crafting AND talking skills.

So basically you have to decide if you want to be a stealthy dodger/evader with very light armor and fewer skillpoints to spare, or a more tanky character with higher constitution, but also inevitably poorer stealth due to having to wear armor with a higher armor penalty. The most important part here is to have a plan, because Underrail is not very forgiving when it comes to placing attribute points and skillpoints all over the place.

With that in mind, let's look at those very things.
If your plan is stealthy gunslinger, I would consider something like this:

Str 3
Dex 10 (extra points go here every time unless you have a well thought out reason for not doing so)
Agi 10
Con 3
Per 4
Will 3
Int 7

This is a build that aims for SMG as main damage dealer, with throwing for grenades, and light armor with dodge/evasion maxed every level and possibly Nimble feat as defense. This is a build that works, and SMG's in particular are very strong main weapons.

As for the stat allocation:
I've already covered dex, strength it self explanatory, and high agility is simply to give you as good defense and stealth as possible, and the feat "Blitz". The agility is sort of negotiable though. Con 3 self explanatory dump stat. Per 4 just to avoid penalty to guns. Will 3, if you really want talking skills and you have points left for it (I doubt it), you can bump agi down to 9 and will up to 4, but in doing so you forsake the feat "Blitz", which is an excellent feat.

Int 7:
The only crafting feats you get at 6 int is Armor Sloping, Weaponsmith and Ballistics. Armor sloping is useless since you can't use heavy armor, Weaponsmith is useless unless you want to incorporate knives into a high dex build, and Ballistics is so-so, and not worth wasting an attribute point on imo. I'd either get int up to 7 (you should decrease perception anyway, so no problem here) or keep it at 4 just to avoid penalties. Int 7 gives you all the crafting feats you could be interested in, both offensive and defensive ones, and even ones for chemical and energy weapons.

As mentioned before, with this build, dodge/eva should be maxed every level. So should really most other things you decide to level up in this game, with some leeway for stuff like biology granted that you know what you are doing and what level you are aiming for. If you want to discard all of this build advice and just take a single piece of advice, the most important I can give is: Don't spread yourself thin. This is a game for specialists, not jack-of-all-trades.

General / Re: Why does Mutated Dog love Core City Mutie more?
« on: October 25, 2016, 02:00:22 pm »
Mutated dog hated Junkyard all his life and secretly wished to get away. Let's face it, it's a dump, and the low-brow mutants he usually hangs around with has been chipping away at his sanity for years, constantly drunk on mushroom brew, fighting and making crude jokes. Finally he managed to reach Core City. It's so big and full of opportunities! And there are Muties there who are cool, hang out in sewers and discuss art, philosophy and politics. He has never before truly felt at home.

Then one day one of his Mutant "friends" from Junkyard shows up and acts like a complete jackass. Mutated Dog is embarassed. He doesn't want his cool new Mutie friends to know what sort of people(?) he used to hang out with. Mutant accuses Mutated Dog of having become stuck-up city slicker who has forgotten his roots, and decides that the only correct course of action is to abduct Mutated Dog and bring him back to Junkyard.

This freaks Mutated Dog out completely. He never wants to go back to that backwater hellhole! Out of sheer terror of being stuck once again in the worst environment of Lower Underrail he attacks Mutant, killing him.

So there you have it.

You'll be able to access the new content from the Core City during the mid-game and later, so you don't have to finish the game or start a new one if you have one running.

Styg, so what happens with the story line? I was under impression that this expansion was going to continue into north underrail...This is something completely different. Are you working on the story line expansion as well? when can we expect it around?

The most important question there is. I double that :)

We currently do not plan to expand the main storyline through a DLC. And when I say main storyline, I mean the C*** stuff and the main actors in relation to it.

What plan to do, however, is expand the world and lore to reveal more information that pertains to this storyline and its events.

Does this mean that if all the planets align there might one day be a sequel that continues the main storyline?  :) You give us a hand and we take the whole arm, but I am very hyped for the dlc.

Hello guys,

My name is Nikola and I'm the new 3D Artist here at Stygian Software. I've been working for about 7 months now on some new character and creature models and animations, also on reworking some older ones.
I hope you'll like it and any questions and suggestions are welcome.

Congratulations with making it as part of the team for the last eight months Nikola!

I'm eager to see what you might have cooked together for the expansion or further projects.  :)

Underrail already looks pretty good as is, so any improvements are sure to impress!

General / Re: SMG Bleeder Build - A horrible or a great idea?
« on: September 03, 2016, 02:54:56 am »
Bjorn!
I'll admit I got a little sidetracked. I have never gone a dex+knife build, so while you seem a bit more focused on the SMG side of things, I am busy stabbing things for now. Currently level 6 right before Old Junkyard, with this stat allocation:

Str: 3(Dump stat)
Dex: 11(self explanatory)
Agi 8(wanted to buff dodge/evasion, seem to recall some traits requiring 8, might be wrong, wasn't meticulous with this build)
Con: 5(I just feel uneasy with too low constitution)
Per: 4(just to avoid skill penalty on guns)
Will: 3(dump stat)
Int: 7(crafting)

Current feats:

Nimble
Recklessness(I can't remember why I started turning this into a crit build, but I did)
Skinner
Weaponsmith (those knives)
Uncanny Dodge

Even though this build went a bit all over the place from the original idea, I will still go down the bleed route, as I have wanted to try that kind of build for long. So far though I very much enjoy stabbing things, and this is my first high-agi build without stealth. I chose to cut stealth because I end up getting it on everything most of the time. I just wanted a break and to try a more straight up combat oriented non con/str based character.

My plan forward is really just to dump every stat into dex, and pick up all bleeding related talents, with a focus on melee (again because I havent played with knives all that much and it is a refreshing change.)

I'll say this though: If there's one annoying thing so far it's robots. They seem to hit most of the time despite of my high evasion (possibly due to me being in melee range often) and both knife and SMG struggle with penetrating their armor. All in all this build so far reminds me a bit of full-psiker (my first build). Strong against everything but robots.

Alternate route to make robots less annoying is to skip Nimble and go for heavier armor. Especially with meager constitution and no stealth this might have been the right thing to do from the get-go, but I am not a patient man, so I scrambled together my idea of a knife/smg char and ran with it.  :D

Horrible? Great? I don't know about that.

Tell you what though, the idea is cool, and that, to me, is all that matters. ;D

I'm already finished with work for the week, so I'm going to start a new character with this build and see how it goes!
