General / Re: Post your experiences with the new Dominating difficulty!
« on: December 12, 2017, 04:50:56 pm »
These new, random encounters, can they happen on all difficulties? Have you seen any yet, and where can they appear??
I hope I will meet some on normal difficulty as well.

On Hard, I met 2 Ironheads on the way from SGS to GMS, in a location previously occupied only by rathounds. Maybe it was a random encounter.

I know i'm not really worthy to post in this elite thread for truly hardcore players since i play on Hard but i did not want to leave this question unanswered :)
Hey, thanks a lot for answering! :) I love this new feature as it will spice things up and add some unpredictability.
I'll be playing on normal (Strict Ironman) and hope to see some random encounters too.

@MirddinEmris OH RIGHT! I misread the wiki page! Thanks for the clarification!

Also, man, don't push Fenix like that. Died once in the Arena, and then died twice on the Lurker's base? Not bad at all.
Yeah, why the accusing tone, I like to hear how interesting builds like Fenix's work in practice, especially when they differ from my own.

But the to hit chance deduction from Evasion, is the "up to 60%" in addition to stuff like lighting and distance?

Example, if you get say -20% from distance, -30% from dark light and -50% from targer evasion, is that 0% to hit? Or always a 5% chance, or something else?

Why reloading screen at all?
I died once during Arena.
I did without reloading both Faceless groups - one near Foundry, one in COre City.
Energy Shield, evasion, dodge, Infused Siphoner Leather Tabi\Leather Armor, Nimble, Deflection, Boxing Gloves, Jumping Bean, Adrenalin Shot.
Can't see why I should see reloading screen often?
You must know the game very well.
I manage to screw up sometimes, and do stupid things. Or get surprised or bumped out of stealth. And sometimes I can not prepare for combat beforehand even with stealth. That is when I need the high HP pool, especially for close combat.

Newton also get an early funeral on NORMAL difficulty.

Just regular playing on normal, killing the beetles, looting the place, telling Newton that the coast is clear... no reason for him to die.

Good example how completionists (no secerets - I want to see and get everything) willingly shoot in their own foot. Ironically 7 PER is enough for maybe only half of hidden areas and shortcuts.
But he has Snooping, so PER=10 for secrets.

However, a sledgehammer build with 3 CON is just not doing it for me... I can not stand the reloading screen. And 4 AGI and stealth, so slow!

No for stealth hammer, 10 STR, 10 CON, 8 AGI is the thing. In fact screw intelligence, we are bludgeoning things to death with a blunt metal object, not philosophing over mathematical problems.

The taser is cool, but if you play Ironman and rely on it to stun a powerful melee enemy... they will resist, I guarantee you.

Yep, no .44 for my guy either. (Normal, oddities)

Check passed, but no big gun or ammo.

Hooked on Elex, sorry Styg.  :(
Is it any good?

Heard some VERY different reviews. Can see why Elex is a problem for some. Maybe the developers have lost their magic, it happens :(

I liked Gothic 1+2, and Gothic 3 is a personal all-time favourite, but only after many community patches.

Kind of think that Elex will be worthwhile in some years, IF it is patched by community, judging by reviews.

The most successful iron man run I did was a stealth SMG with Quick Tinkering, Sure Step, and Pack Rathound to carry a ton of traps and caltrops. Eventually I got Thick Skull at level 12. I eventually died in the Balor zone which was a tragic but totally preventable death--I got spotted because I got careless, but even after I got spotted, I could probably have survived if I hadn't panicked and done several stupid things in a row.

I pay a lot more attention to defense when playing iron man. Less minimaxing and more points to CON. I will say playing super cautiously gets tedious after a while. This probably contributed to my carelessness above. Underrail is a long game.

I think SMG + Quick Tinkering is a good iron man build. Quick Tinkering is one of the most powerful feats in the game. I also like Thick Skull once you start facing things that stun (not many of these until you're through depot A).

My son has gotten to Core City in iron man mode playing a heavy armor assault rifle character, that seems to work pretty well too.

Funny that you should mention this, because these are the exact two builds I have in mind.

SMG-Quick Tinkering:
SMG, Grenades/Throwing, Traps, Stealth and high Con. Super initiative (also Gunslinger for this alone), tons of explosive options, good HP pool, decent evasion, weak armor, mediocre damage drom SMG. Got to lvl 10 just now, but foolishly died to stealthed Lurkers. Trying to dodge an assault rifle burst point blank was not a smart idea, should have used a grenade.

Assault Rifle-Heavy:
*If* I can be bothered to start again before the expansion I will use this. 10 Con, Assault rifle, Juggernaut, maybe stealth also, maybe not. Lack of mobility is major pain, getting hit first in all fights is horrifying, so I am not sure if Ironman is possible.

(Burst-firing weapons are probably OP. Should nerf maybe the Smart-ness of the attack, perhaps.)

Nice list, but anything will work if you reload from time to time.

Personally I am trying to finish Underrail with a hardcore approach:
I die, I start over. So far I have made it to core city and that is it.

So, a list of no-reload Ironman builds (probably a short list) would be useful.

General / Re: Shattering without Cryogenic Induction possible???
« on: November 20, 2017, 07:11:15 am »
The shattering can be done by anything that deals >50% (mech/freeze damage) of remaining health it seems.

At least my cryo+sledge psi hammer guy got to shatter quite a few icicles with super slam. (He was too weak against enemy psi unfortunately)

But for shatter to work, you obviously need the feat. The interesting question is if, after you have cryogenic induction, shatter work with pistols/traps.

It would be fun to set a cryotrap, the break enemy like the Terminator with a sledge super slam.

+35% shield HP sounds way better than 125 Evasion or a few points in Con (which I can't spare).

It's worse actually) Half of the attacks just don't care about shield, because even low frequency module in shield gives a very small amount of damage reduction for low impact attacks. So, any melee or crossbow guy, wouldn't even notice your shield, and with 3 Con + psionic health reduction, aimed shot form a crossbow will often mean instant death.

125 evasion can actually turn into a decent number with stuff like high quality tabi boots and infused siphoner leather armor, especially if you use drugs like Jumping Bean. Though even that would help only so much because a) without dodge, melee guys would still mess you up b) with your health and no decent armor someone sneezing near you can send you to reload screen.
Yep, this is unfortunate but true.
My knowledge of underrail is limited, but there are simply a lot of circumstances that you cant control. Like dialogue-initiated combat (no stealth opener, only initiative roll). Or high stealth melee enemies, stabbing you in the back unless you have REALLY good stealth and detection. You cant turn on your shield if you are incapacitated or dead.
A critical hit from an X-bow, like MirddinEmris mentions, or a grenade hitting you right in the body, means instant death if you have so low HPs, no armor or evasion. Stepping on a mine will also happen occationally even if your detection is decent.

I like to play as close to Ironman as possible, and get really annoyed when I die. Usually I could have avoided death, in retrospect, or I screw up by for example stepping in my own bear trap in the middle of a close shave combat.
But I try to make a character who can survive as well as possible. And the weak 3-STR, 3-CON, no evasion/dodge builds so popular here, always see the death screen eventually.
If I were to make a character with three CON, I would always have high AGI, stealth+evasion+dodge. Even this will not save you from psionics always, who cant miss.

If you are cool with the occational quickload, then you'll get by, I suppose.
If not, like me, then you got to plan your character not by "what can I do to my enemies when I have first strike", but "what happens when I get jumped". Being able to survive one round of incoming fire is the best, and that unfortunately means decent or high CON, and/or good armor. This limits your offensive capability, so you have to have a good plan. But this is just my personal preference.
