A most noob friendly build would probably be a stealthy sniper/AR guy which also has solid con.
I totally agree with you, in the first playthrough I made the build that op is suggesting, but for some reason, he get torn apart in the junk yard, however. In the second playthrough, I made a stealthy puncher build, and I have to say it feels so good when you can choose who to fight.
p.s. it seems like melee build is actually easier than rifle builds because melee can do crowd control while rifle can not and both build kill people at mostly the same pace.
