Energy shields
« on: June 01, 2016, 05:39:55 am »
I have three questions concerning energy shields:

1. Is it good idea to put secondary modulator when crafting energy shield? If yes, then which one is best suited?
2. What enchantment is best?
3. High Frequency Shield Emitter seems best. Whats the point of using Low Frequency shields? Dont unarmed/fist/knife attacks will get thru anyways?

1. Only if your electronics skills can support 2 modulator.
according to my experience,
if highest quality of electronics you can mess with is X then,
single X > primary(x/1.3) with secondary(x/1.3)

2. High Efficiency Energy Converters.

3. Melee attacks will always get through no matter what frequency you use. Using lower frequency will take off few damage off per hit, if the attack is melee.
I will be brutally honest.
Shields are only good for stopping bullets, don't expect them to block crossbow bolts or anything slower than that. You might as well as specialize it to block bullets.
Edit:, oh right, shields also block quiet number of psi attacks, so keep that in mind.

If you can put two, do it, it's as simple as that)

I usually use two shields - one is High frequency with converter to increase "hit points" of the shield, second is low frequency with amplifier (just don't put very high quality one, or you end up with a very short lifespan). Combined with decent armor (even leather armor can do about 10 mechanical threshold with good quality infused leather) it will block a decent amount of damage for a period of 1-2 turns, which is usually enough for me to deal with enemies.

From my limited knowledge of this game, LF shields are generally more useful for heavy-armor dudes, since they are already relatively resistant to bullets, but they can sometimes struggle with melee attacks. HF on the other hand is good for light-armor dudes, since they are pretty good at dodging melee attacks by themselves, but they usually aren't all that great at dodging bullets, and if one does hit them, it's gonna be a bit more painful than with a heavy-armor dude.

2. Converters at the moment, but I except shields enhancements will be tweaked to make the others more in line with them.

Comin at ya from 2020 and no, no they haven't

I see literally no reason to use amplify or conservative shield. Amplify doesn't even make sense, it double the shielding but cripples the HP of shield. So how exactly does a shield with 400 shielding have 200 capacity? Isn't capacity total health? So whats the point of the shield being able to absorb 400 HP when it only has 200???

If it works differently than this, then god damn this shit is confusing since even looking at the wiki this is how it sounds like it works, and makes sense why everyone just uses the converter.

Slow down, it's been only 4 years!

Styg hasn't revamped shields yet, but over the years he has expressed interest in doing so. But yeah, at this point Infusion seems likely target for the shield rework. A new game would allow tweaking old systems more freely, without regard to old content.

Seems like a missed opportunity. Whenever options are thing and there is universal "correct" option, then there are no options at all.

A conservative shield can be ok for exploring unknown territory. Depletes slowly, easy on the battery consumption. You keep it on all the time, to survive sneak attacks, traps and the like.

Only useful if you play with a more defensive Ironman-like mindset, trying to minimize reloads.

Amplified low/low is good against melee enemies, especially if you are low con and REALLY need to survive a round or two.

Right that could make sense, just to clarify my understanding is correct

400 Very high shield with only 200 capacity is pointless since at max it can absorb 200 right?

An important point to consider is that no bullets are Very High speed.  None!

Bullets from SMGs and Pistols are Medium.  I would guess Shotguns also.

Bullets from Sniper and Assault Rifles are High.  Explosions are also consider High Speed.

Very High Speed is for Laser, Plasma and Electrical attacks only.

Xbows and Cold attacks are Low Speed.

And Melee is Very Low.
