I went with a stealth+traps build. I found the train, set up some traps and threw caltrops while out of site behind a rock, hoping to make the bandits investigate. This being my first playthrough, I like to try out different outcomes.I saved the game and went out to talk to them, since it was an option.  Before leaving, I stealthed through the place and looted a few crates.

After realizing I could just walk away and potentially join them down the line, I opted for that. I later realized that I could not tell the captain I didn't find the train, despite telling the bandits i'd leave, and going back to the train to see if there was more dialogue, and visiting the protectorate outpost.

My best guess is that at least one of the three following caused this bug:

1. a bandit lost a few HP to a caltrop, (even though it could not and was not traced back to me)
2. setting traps (even though they were set in stealth and did not affect any of the bandits)
3. looting the crates (even though stealthed and never making them suspicious)

I looked up the mission on the underrail wiki, and there's no info on this subject.

I'd like to know if its possible to salvage this and still being able to join the drones, maybe with console commands. I don't want to play the game back from level 14 for it. Unfortunately, I don't have any saves from before then

Would you upload your save (via Google/One Drive, Dropbox, or whichever cloud service you prefer) and post it here so I could take a look at it? I suspect the caltrops, and if so, it should be fixable.

I can do that.  I continued to play the game in the meantime, (leveling up at least twice, beating the arena, and completing a few missions, dunno if that means more info to wade through).

I'll message you the file.

The bandits were indeed hurt by the caltrops, and the flag that they were attacked was set, but they did not actually turn hostile. Fixed the bug for the next patch.
