In case you rescue the professor (or prevent his kidnapping) and after that, in dialogue with him, say "get rest" instead of "what to do", he will not give you quests anymore (only loading save before this helps).

He should contact you over the navcom after a while and give you the mission. That said, it doesn't make sense for you to lose the option of asking him about more work, so I've added it to his "main menu" of dialog options in case you missed it the first time.
