Which jetksi to pick
« on: March 15, 2020, 12:37:30 am »
First of all; all the info is here:
https://www.underrail.com/wiki/index.php?title=Jet_Ski

There are five categories of jets:  junk, military, melee/speed, hybrids, ranged/defense
junk:  junk jet, scrapper, scooter, skimmer, freighter, reef glider
military:  aegis patroller, protectorate cruiser
melee/speed:  blazer, phaser, torpedo
hybrids:  glow, shark
ranged/defense:  plasma leviator, devastator

The junk jets are garbage; they get you from point A to point B, slowly, and without style (except the reef glider I guess).  They're cheap though.
The freighter is for Al Fabet-ing and another reason that I won't spoil; it's also very protective for it's price (14k).

The military jets are "free" (meaning you can steal them/kill for them if you don't mind faction hostility) and one can be given to you in one situation.  They are slower/less maneuverable than the hybrids, but tankier.  Perfectly suitable for ranged characters, but not specialized at it (or anything for that matter).  The patroller is slightly more maneuverable, but slightly less tanky; they are almost the same.

The melee/speed jets are the fastest and best for offensive melee characters.  The torpedo is the fastest (by quite a bit) and most maneuverable in the game, but also the worst for ranged combat and also the least protective and most fragile.  The phaser is the 2nd fastest, but is somewhat tankier than the torpedo.  The phaser is the cheapest of the non-junk jets (16k, blazer 17k, torpedo 22k) and is equal to or better than the blazer in every way, except it glows (green) and thus makes you easier to hit with ranged weapons and ruins the ambush feat (if you have it).  If you just want to go fast (in style) and dont care about anything else, get the phaser.
All three of these have turbo; turbo makes your jet faster for two turns but uses up more battery power; the faster your jet, the more damage your melee attacks deal.
Jet ski combat favors ranged attacks, due to the fact that you can't target land enemies in melee unless you and they are right on the edge of the water, so for melee you are generally limited to sea serpents and other jetskis.

The hybrids are the best jets if you are both melee and ranged, and are the most stylish imo.  They are middle of the road; faster/more maneuverable than the military jets but less tanky.  They both have built-in ranged options; the glow can shoot lasers (and has a larger battery for this), while the shark can shoot rockets (like mk6-7 HEs with a radius the same size as plasma grenades; note it costs 30 action points so you can shoot a rocket and throw a grenade on the same turn) though the rockets are fairly heavy and will slow you down.  The glow glows (red), same as the phaser, and is the 2nd most expensive jet (29k; shark is 25k).  The glow and the shark are otherwise almost the same as each other; the glow is slightly faster but less tanky (though it has better energy defense).   Note:  the shark has a larger engine capacity (which could potentially make it faster than the glow, I think, but with the rockets probably not; haven't tested it).

The ranged/defense jets are the best if you want defense and/or a good platform to shoot from.  The leviator is the 3rd most expensive jet (28k) and the devastator is by far the most expensive (42k; 13k more than the glow).  The devastator is the tankiest jet in the game and has the most powerful built-in weapon (it's basically a naga blast that costs 50 action points).  The leviator has a built-in plasma cannon (like a plasma pistol), and is slightly faster/more maneuverable, the 2nd tankiest (but the best energy defense); perhaps the best choice for gunners.

Note that while out on the water, you are in the darkness and can often trigger ambush on land targets.

Thanks harperfan7, great information, I wasn't even aware some of them could shoot.

Can you answer me one question though: how do you guys manage to afford this? On dominating, no matter the build, I always have at best a couple thousand coins. Do you Al-Fabet to afford these gliders, or is there some sort of strategy to deal with this? Do you have to steal them and turn people hostile? I've played Expedition three or so times and never got past having the stuff the story gave me, so usually the stupid junk jet or an Aegis, I'm really curious how many people actually got to buying one of the cooler jets?!

The glow glows (red), same as the phaser

[...]

I am nearly sure that the glow will prevent ambush attack. Wich is a huge drawback if you rely on it.

Otherwise, many thanks !
This short guide helps a lot, it's not that easy to understand everything about jetski, took me a long time. I'm sure it will be very usefull for a lot of people.

Maybe you could add some info abouts jet-ski traits to get ?

On dominating, no matter the build, I always have at best a couple thousand coins.
If you have decent crafting and can get Disassemble, you'll find that especially on DOMINATING that feat makes a world of difference in how much money you have available.  You don't need to pick it up particularly early; I usually wait until I've cleared Rail Crossing, Foundry, and the easy parts of Core City (ie before completing the Oligarch quests).  Until then, just don't sell anything at all that could be disassembled.  Nothing.  When you do finally pick up Disassemble, spend an hour or so of real time turning your stash of gear into parts, then reassemble that giant pile of components into the highest-possible-value stuff you can, and then just reassemble whatever's left as you please.  Now when you go visit those electronics and weapons and armor merchants, you'll have immensely valuable things to sell, and it'll be very easy to pull all their charons off of them.

It's still not infinite money like you have on easier settings, but Disassemble will allow you to afford whatever jetski you want, and still have enough left over to trick out your house and buy a few sheets of super steel.

EDIT: If that's not an option, then at the very least try to find room in your build for enough skill points to get your effective Mechanics to 50, and maybe Tailoring as well.  Tear apart your basic stuff into scrap, make advanced repair kits, and repair your expensive stuff before you sell it.  Metal armor, firearms, energy weapons, and light/medium overcoats can sell very well if at full repair.

Hm, ok, thanks. I've been doing the repair thing liberally, but it boils down to slogging the merchandise to all the traders in order to get their 400 charons then? 105 merchant runs for the most expensive jetskis and assuming I have high quality stuff to sell for 400 charons. Had been hoping there would be some secret trick but this sounds like you need to basically really collect all loot, either for repair kits or for high grade items. Well, if now is not the time to stay inside for some extended merchant run, when is ;)

It's not really all that bad if you set it up in advance.  For example, in Core City, why not put al your junk in those barrels by the elevator on the Oligarch level? Quick access.  Every time you come back to CC, grab a few things out of your Barrel Of Fun and go sell it.  You can easily pull 1.5k out of merchants in CC per run.  In Foundry, you can use the barrel at the bar, or just dump the stuff in a pile outside.  Foundry is easily worth 800 charons.  IoT is worth 1k anyway - Hannah alone has something like 700, right? I forget off the top of my head.  Even Junkyard can get you nearly 1k, and that big old dumpster is an awfully inviting place to store your trash.

Anyway, yeah, it takes a good long while.  But if you just get in the habit of checking inventories when you happen to be in town, it comes fairly organically.  I rarely do more than about half a dozen dedicated merchant runs on a character.  Instead, I do small loops, dumping off loot as I explore and clear the world, and just checking merchants when I happen to be in the neighborhood.

As you say, no time like the present for wasting hours on optimizations!  ;D

Fellow OCDs unite for the perfect route using Dude ;) I appreciate the advice, I'll also try and fit the merchant feats in a build to see how that changes things. I think one should have driven the most pimped jetski at least once in life.

Why do you guys recommend the barrels? I've read this multiple times here but I'm always just dumping my stuff on the ground in front of the appropriate shop. I swear no one ever stole stuff from there...  Sorry for the offtopic.

Can you answer me one question though: how do you guys manage to afford this?

Short answer: mercantile.  With higher merc you can haggle for lower prices on the jets, in addition to all the extra money you've made in the game up to that point.  Otherwise get good at maximizing profits from selling loot (especially crafted loot) and the logistics involved in that.

Maybe you could add some info about jet-ski traits to get ?

They're a lot more self-explanatory than the jets, but sure.

Naval Combat:  There's hardly any reason not to get this.
Improved Naval Combat:  Same, if you're a pirate with 7 agility.
Jet n Jab:  Same, if you're a pirate and intend to use fists/knives.

Naval Jousting:  Everybody with the melee skill and enough strength to use spears should get this, even if you dont have any spear feats; the extra damage will have spears out-doing sledges.  Unarmed specialists might not.

Sea Dog:  (I posted incorrect info the first time; this feat is only available to pirates)
lvl 26, 10 agility, pirate
I wouldn't take this feat unless you can take it right at the start of the black sea, and I wouldn't take it unless you intend to do as much ranged fighting as possible from a jetski.  If you do take it, you will whoop ass on a jetski, but it's a luxury feat.  One thing to note is that this feat lets you use faster jetskis than normal as a ranged character without penalty, as it further raises stability.

For psi-builds without any melee combat, is it just a question of choosing what looks good? Any suggestions?

Well, there are some psi abilities that have a chance to hit (like pyrokinesis); I'm not sure if they are affected by stability, but otherwise you just need to decide if you want to be fast, be protected, or some mix of both.

I have bought a Glow on every run through the game since jetskis were added to the game.
