I apologize for any unintentional inaccuracies or misplacements. Regarding the gear deposit, I am playing on Normal but was unable to proceed through JSHQ without depositing all my items. I had already visited LHC and implanted the chip as well as Hacked to upgrade its security level. I wonder if a patch change or some specific item causes this to occur? Do you have any information about this?

The Ferryman is a character in the Black Sea. His real name is randomized every playthrough.

Background
Ferryman is exactly seventy years old. He spent many years in the sea, searching for relics and looking for truth. He is tolerated by all factions of the Black Sea, including Sørmirbæren.
Player interactions
Ferry location rotation
He changes position every now and then. You can learn his location by contacting Yahota via NavCom or asking Donnie, the pirate merchant. If Ferryman has friendly enough attitude, player can also ask him for his radio frequency, allowing to contact Ferryman through NavCom.
# Northeastern waters (I8)
# Sørmirbæren geyser village (J11)

Philosophy
The ferryman is not very talkative, but he can be persuaded to answer some of your questions (Persuasion option is enough).
After talking to him long enough you can ask him about his peculiar philosophy. By doing so you can obtain one of the Philosophy feats (tier depends on your chosen dialogue options and Player's effective Intelligence).
* Philosophy
* Philosophy II
* Philosophy III

Trader inventory
The ferryman is a trader. His stock changes based on his location and whether the muties, pirates or Sørmirbæren have been defeated. His special merchandise can be unlocked after discussing philosophy with him or passing Intelligence check(8 effective required).

Joint Security Headquarters is a heavily armed facility located far to the north of Black Sea Expedition Camp, deep inside Sørmirbæren territory.

Description
The entrance to the Joint Security Headquarters lies at coordinates F12, however the player can also park their jet ski at E11 in a small native outpost and make their way to F12 on foot. Inside of the facility can be accessed only after upgrading your clearance level at Nexus of Technology and implanting microchip into your own hand in Lemurian Health Center. Because of the heavy presence of automatons, EMP Grenades are very useful here.

If the player hadn't wiped out the native village nearby, destroyed the Black Rock Totem or killed Sørmirbæren Bäsekar, they will be ambushed by a group of Sørmirbæren upon leaving the facility.

Walkthrough
This section can be tricky, particularly for gear-dependent characters, as the player is required to put all of their equipment (including what they are wearing) in the Item Container at the entrance to proceed. The items are then transferred to the (locked) Decontamination office and the player must find a way to get into the security office to get their items back while avoiding security cameras, Seahorse Plasma Turrets, Strongmen and Handmaidens.

The turrets and cameras can be deactivated from the northernmost office, but this requires going west to the armory and through the spider-infested area to do so. Stealth is very helpful here, as are Psionics. Make sure to refill psionic reserves before entering! A character with Hacking can get a Haxxor device and batteries in the west office (although this requires avoiding or fighting a Strongman), but other characters will need to get TNT Charges from the unlocked cabinet in the armory to the west to blow a hole in the wall. Laying one TNT far away from the Decontamination office first may draw enemies toward it, allowing the player to destroy the Decontamination office wall with a second TNT and then slip into the office to re-equip.

The security office to the west has two electronic locks that grant access to a large spider-infested storage area. The Strongmen in that area will fight the spiders, allowing a player to loot the armory while they are busy. If the Strongmen can be avoided, a player can run up the stairwell to the west end of that area and use the console to open up all of the storage rooms (and their attendant spiders). If the Strongmen are still alive and active, they will fight the spiders for the player. The northeastern storage area has a broken wall that allows access back to the entrance area where a console can be used to lift the lockdown and disable the cameras and turrets.

Outside

A character with Hacking can get a Haxxor device and batteries in the west office (although this requires avoiding or fighting a Strongman), but other characters will need to get TNT from the unlocked cabinet in the armory to the west to blow a hole in the wall.

Outside
Dude had a vision... of a journey with you. Although he doesn't remember the specific details it involves gathering ingredients through his old homes. Completion grants Second Sight which allows Fast travel through rifts, with the aid of The Juice.

Objectives
* The Dude had another vision...
* Help Dude search his old home in Core City.
* Help Dude search his old home in Upper Underrail.
* Dude needs 2 mushroom brews, two measures of unsaturated psionic catalyst, two of morphine, and two of gyromitrin to make the juice for you and him. Speak to him when you're ready to continue the journey.
* Dude needs you to find any kind of mineral oil you can find in this base. It is the only way to return back whence you came.

Walkthrough
After returning the Mushroom Brew to Dude in the Rail Crossing bar, you can join him in the quest by elevating your consciousness through mushroom brew.

Dude's home in Core City
This transports you to the Dude's old home in Core City and gives you Heavy Intoxication a flat penalty to all stats that decreases as you journey with Dude. Zoner Ma can be persuaded, intimidated (30 effective skill), bribed with 100 Charons or insulted with Intelligence (8 base before the Heavy Intoxication debuff) into letting you search her apartment. There's a hidden cracked tile in the south-east corner containing a small key. This opens a safe behind a panel containing an Unsaturated Psionic Catalyst.

Dude's home in Upper Underrail
Next stop is Dude's old lab in Upper Underrail. The ingredient here, Morphine, is trapped in a locker in a locked room inexplicably full of mutants. The Dude left the keycard in the desk. The mutants can be fought directly or the Dude's zap-spider addled console can be used to turn on the cyro chambers and slowly refrost the mutants.

Console Puzzle
There are three sequences of numbers hidden in the trash can, chemical station and power box: 67 33 82, 79 55 11 and 76 89 25. The console has options each with 3 numbers separated by jumbles of letters. The solution to the puzzle is to sum the 3 numbers in the console options. The correct options in the console will have the same total as the 2 digit number in the clue. For example 67 33 82 requires entering in the option that equals 67 (23+31+13) followed by the option that equals 33 followed by the option that equals 82.

Solution

Dude's cave home
The Dude's next home is in the Upper Caves. The Dude warns you that's there danger inside but cannot remember what specifically. A shanty inside a wet and damp cave with bits of broken down technology. Dude's cave home is full of cats and bits of scrap. When the player approaches Dude's bed, the cats suddenly turn hostile and begin shooting powerful lasers! The murderous cats have a very low HP pool but have very good dodge and evasion, Throwing weapons such as Frag Grenades, Molotov Cocktails and Traps are good option to fight off the fatal felines. You can also go into a storage area before heading to the bed and get some Dog Crates off of the shelves in there. You can use the dog crates on the cats to capture them before they become hostile and avoid fighting many or all of them and earning yourself some Captured Laser Cats.

By searching the desk in the ramshackle laboratory, you will find Gyromitrin. Exit the cave after dealing with the cats and inform The Dude that the area is safe. Telling him about the Gyromitrin and he realise it is the final ingredient that he needs. The Dude cannot remember the exact measurements of ingredients to create The Juice but you can help him remember which will net you 2 Oddity XP. Dude will now create you a bottle of The Juice. Consuming the mysterious psi-alcoholic cocktail will grant you Second Sight and allow you to attune yourself to the Rift in Dude's house and begin a rift-walk to locations unknown.

Gray Army Base
The visions didn't warn Dude that your ultimate destination is the Gray Army Base. Dude can't make any more juice to return home but mineral oil might inexplicably provide enough lubrication for the residual juice in your body to work again. The Gun Lubricating Oil is located on a shelf at the back of armory. The armory is immediately to the north and west of the starting zone, behind a garage door.

Access requires hacking the access console (100 Hacking) or getting the Magatzin keycard from a desk in the North-West of the second level. The Gray Army Base is swarming with Gray Army Gunners, Snipers, Grenadiers, Heavy Gunners and Officers. You can avoid combat if you wear the appropriate uniform and avoid dialogue (does not work if player character is a woman). If the original soldiers are killed the lights will cut and a Gray Army Spec Ops team and a few Dobermans will spawn. Retrieving the gun lube will reward you with 2000 classic/2 oddity XP.

Alternatively, if you happen to have a Hydraulic Fluid Canister in your inventory, you can give it to Dude right away and skip the whole base.

You can use the dog crates on the cats to capture them before they become hostile and avoid fighting many or all of them.

}}

Phreak (also known as Mit Draper and Old Hacker) is a hacker from North Underrail currently residing in Core City. He is an extremely elusive figure whose style of hacking is brute-forcing something until it works. He is hiding out in an abandoned facility full of Coil Spiders, and to reach him the player has to activate all the EMP generators in the facility. It is noteworthy that performing this quest-line allows the player to bypass doing any main story quest for the Oligarchs.

Player Interactions
Before he is even met, the player can find several orange phone boxes in Lower Underrail that (usually with certain hacking and electronics skills) can give insight into Phreak's handiwork and interactions with the Protectorate, Lunatics and Ironheads.

There are several ways to reach Phreak.

* Get in Motion 6 times. This may have the undesirable side effect if giving the player the Motioner feat and is somewhat expensive.

* Use the ladder entrance in the south-west map of the Middle Level of Core City (14 effective Perception to notice). The entrance is specifically in the western rectangular block, the one next to the gangsters, on the map screen that is west of Halim's Electronics Store.

* Use the ladder entrance in the Large Drain Pipe section of the Sewer passages (11 effective Perception, but can by bypassed by having Night Vision Goggles equipped and activated). The ladder is specifically located at the south end on the same side of the water from the entrance, against the wall just before entering the large drain pipe.

If player has already accepted or completed the Seek the Acid Hunters quest for any of the Oligarchs, he will be missing and only his laptop may be found. Player may still be able to finish Phreak's crunch on their own, however most of the rewards for his quests will become unavailable.

The player may eventually find him and be tasked to retrieve a set of heavy-duty cables from the Acid Hunters' lair, potentially also unlocking a trap door leading directly near their hideout (depending on his attitude). For finishing this quest, he will give the player the Camera Jammer.

After that, the player is tasked to retrieve two items from two different hideouts in Upper Underrail. For this mission Phreak grants the player the Orange Box to complete the sound-based puzzles.
Afterwards, the player will be tasked to turn on boilers possible in the abandoned facility in order to stress-test the system. Doing so will enable a path leading directly to the Research Facility and to the Abomination's Lair, but it is dangerous as there are both a robot (likely varying in difficulty, up to an Industrial Robot) and several Death Stalkers.

By the end of his quest-line he may also allow the player to buy Contact-Activated Capacitative Sheets (for 200 charons) and Forged Underrail Express Tickets (for 100 charons). Additionally, with 50 effective Persuasion, he can be convinced to grant the player several extra minutes in the Gauntlet. His stock refreshes every 60 minutes.

Phreak's rewards depend on whether the player already knows about him and general respect during conversations. Knowing about Phreak ahead of time (or passing his Persuasion check in dialogue, 85 effective skill) and not insulting him will unlock all 3 rewards (Camera Jammer, CACS and Forged Underrail Express Tickets).

In addition there is a hidden modifier that decreases and increases based on player's dialogue with Phreak that modifies the amount of goods given to player during a purchase of CACS or forged tickets. By discussing various things and being respectful to him, allows player to obtain more items for the same price.

There are few ways of learning more about Phreak before meeting him:
* Player can read his entry at Oculus with second clearance level.
* Emergency phone north of GMS past the bandit checkpoint contains some information about him if you can repair it (requires Electronics or Hacking).
* Player can find some information about him on the Bloody Mobile Computer found at an ironhead camp in the dark metro tunnels between Foundry and Core City.
* Another emergency phone with information about Phreak can be found deep inside an Ironhead lair south-east of Foundry (Simon Peres' hideout).
After successfully obtaining information about Phreak, player should get a new Other sidequest in their quest notes telling them to find the person responsible for hacking underrail metro emergency phones.

As a side-interaction, player can discuss various topics with him, including his hacking techniques. With 85 base Hacking the player can talk about how Phreak should learn to use the cutting-edge Haxxors that he will scoff at, but if the player has the Huxkey its design completely takes Phreak by surprise.

If the player turns Phreak hostile via dialogue the player has several options to make use of base stats to counter-attack:<br>
* With 10 Strength: Both player and Phreak receive damage without any debuffs
* With 13 Strength: Phreak is hit for some damage and gets Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns
* With 16 Strength: Phreak is instantly killed
* With 11 Dexterity: Phreak's attack is nullified
* With 15 Dexterity: Phreak is hit for some damage and gets Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns
* With 10 Agility: Phreak's attack is nullified
* With 14 Agility: Phreak is hit for some damage and gets Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns
* With 13 Constitution: Phreak's attack is nullified and player gains +15 Initiative bonus
* With 14 Will: Phreak's attack is nullified and player gains +15 Initiative bonus
* Failed counter-attack will cause player to suffer damage, become Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns

Trivia
* Phreak is based off John Draper and the phreaking culture.
** His style of "crunching" is a reference to John Draper's discovery that the toy whistles that came with the Cap'n Crunch cereal boxes played at a perfect frequency suitable for phreaking.
