Silent Isle is a location in the waterways of Lower Caves.

Description
A mysterious, dark island located somewhere in the waterways between Core City and Junkyard, more specifically at the southwest corner of Core Ring. Most ferry captains stay away from this place, and it isn't near any main trading routes. Captain Broderick on the Junkyard Docks will take you there during and after a quest to retrieve cargo lost at the island. In the Underrail: Expedition expansion, the player can access Silent Isle with a Jet Ski.

Some azuridae, rathounds can be seen around and a large amounts of mindshrooms grow on the island. Walking around in the darkess of the island gives you a Strange Feeling, but this can be avoided by staying in light. Mysterious Pillars of psionic nature can be found in a cave underneath the isle.

The island
* 7 respawning Mindshrooms
* 4 patches of respawning Lake Mushrooms
* To the southeast is a secret (found with 7 Perception) underwater bridge leading to a small area with a dead man on it.
* on the north side of the isle is a metal container containing Lost Cargo (item for quest Retrieve the lost cargo) and a Periscope Part oddity (2 XP)
* on the west side of the isle is a pile of rubble containing a Trilobite Fossil oddity, 1 XP
* Can be fished in this area: Blue Eel, Minihead, Yellow Puckerfish, Walking Fish, Anglerfish, Pentapus, Black Dragon

The caves
* The middle of the cave is occupied by Mysterious Pillars

<br>
Captain Broderick's story
This one time I was sailing back from the Hub when I started having problems with the engine's power converter. To fix it I had to turn off the main engine and I didn't want to do that in the middle of the river because the current was strong and I knew there were some stalagmites around I could crash into.

So I anchored at this nearby place the sailors call Silent Isle. I heard tales of it being cursed and how anyone who spends too much time there is never seen again and such nonsense. But that didn't scare me. The only thing I cared about is whether there were pirates there, and as far as I could tell there weren't any.

So I turned off the engine and main lights because I didn't want to be seen and I also didn't want them to drain the battery before I could finish the repairs. So I was working there in silence with just a flashlight on so I could see what I was doing. It took me hours to fix the converter, but I managed to do it. I powered up the engine and started to retract the anchor. And I switched on the main lights.

That's when I saw it... or should I say him. I saw me! Standing there on the shore looking back at myself.

It's not that just that I saw a guy that looked a lot like me, or even that I saw a guy that looked exactly like me... He was wearing the exact same clothes I was with exactly the same stains and tears that my clothes had. It was like I was looking into a mirror, except his pose was different.

And you know what the weirdest thing was? For a few brief moments I couldn't really tell which one of us was real. That was the creepiest feeling I ever had in my life.

I didn't know what to do. I just stood there staring at him and listening to the anchor pulling up. And as soon as the anchor was up, I pushed the throttle and raced out of there.

And nowadays I just steer clear of that island altogether.
:—Captain Broderick

Quests
* Dockmaster Silas gives you a mission to sail to the island with captain Broderick, find and retrieve lost cargo that's believed to be washed up there.
** The Lost Cargo can be found on the north-northwest shore inside a metal crate.

Secrets
* Underwater rock bridge in southeast shore, leading to a dead body.

Base Ability Scores in Underrail serve as the base for your character and consist of seven attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Agility, Constitution, Perception, Will and Intelligence. Certain functions, items and actions require a minimum score of a certain base ability to be used or performed, while some items, such as foods, temporarily boost them. Some feats also require a minimum score of a certain base ability (and skill level) to be picked and used. Each base ability is set to a default of 5 and has a minimum of 3 and maximum of 10 during character creation.

In the base game, you gain a base ability point every 4 levels. No base points are gained on Veteran levels, but veterans may choose an Increased Base Ability feat. Minimum base ability score is 1 and maximum is 20.

Level || 4 || 8 || 12 || 16 || 20 || 24
Cumulative base points || 1 || 2 || 3 || 4 || 5 || 6

Base abilities directly boost related skills by a certain number. An ability score of 4 is the breakpoint where related skills receive no bonus nor penalty from the ability score.

Every point in base ability above 4 increases the effective value of dependent skills by 8.5%, while every point below 4 decreases it by 10%.

Objectives
* Captain Herve wants you to help him find out what happened with a Protectorate train that was supposed to bring supplies to Rail Crossing, but never arrived. The train was supposed to set off from South Railroad Outpost.

Walkthrough
The train was hijacked. The train and its hijackers can be found in a small depot some ways south from Rail Crossing. Follow the railroad south from Rail Crossing until you reach a railway junction turning west.

Once you have found the train, you can either report the hijacking to Major Clifton in South Railroad Outpost, or try to deal with the bandits yourself. They aren't immediate hostile, so you can talk to them and learn they belong to an anarchist group called Free Drones.

* If you report the train's location to Clifton, Protectorate soldiers will take care of the bandits.

* If you kill the bandits yourself, the last one of them arms a powerful bomb near the train (120 second timer)
** You can intimidate him to defuse the bomb (50 skill confirmed, maybe less)verify
*** Inspect the battery → [Traps] Attempt to remove the battery
*** Inspect the wires → [Traps] Cut the black one
** If the bomb detonates, the train will be destroyed and the entire train depot will be buried under stone. You can report the train's destruction and Free Drones involvement to Clifton.

* Or you can leave the bandits be and lie to Captain Herve that you cannot find the train. Doing so will fail his mission, but opens up the opportunity to join Free Drones.

* It is also possible to persuade (70 skill required) the bandits to leave the train. This leads to opportunities to join either Protectorate or Free Drones, depending on what you do with the knowledge of the train's location.

Aftermath
Depending on how the mission went, you will be later on presented an opportunity to join the Protectorate or Free Drones, or nothing at all.
* Dealing with the bandits and/or revealing the train's location to authorities in SRO will get you a reward from Herve and an opportunity to join the Protectorate.
* Finding the train, not attacking the bandits and lying to Herve that you cannot find the train will lead to an opportunity to join the Free Drones.
* Getting the train blown up to smithereens will provide no follow-up quests nor rewards from anyone.

The Oddity XP System is an alternative experience system which rewards exploration, introduced in upcoming version.

The main purpose of this system is to allow players to level at a similar rate regardless of what their build and play-style is. Going through the world stealthily, guns blazing (or in some cases diplomatically) or anything in between should now earn you similar amount of experience.

Oddity items
These items are scattered throughout Underrail, mostly at points of interest. Some of them are gained by killing critters and other specific types of enemies, but since each oddity item can be studied a limited number of times, you can only farm XP from a single creature type to a certain point.

Also, there are generally more instances of an oddity item type placed than you need, so you don't have to have 100% exploration score to get them all. Though, some of them will be unique and only awarded for discovering special areas or defeating bosses.

They can also be found when playing with Classic XP System, but do not have as big of a role in leveling process there.

Description
Azuridae are mutated and enlarged insects that resemble Rhinoceros beetles, instead of horns though, they have massive brains that they use to power their psionic abilities. Azuridae are so called due to the azure hue on their carapace.

Their psionic powers have granted them nicknames such as "psi bug" and "psi beetle" by residents of the Underrail.

Fighting tactics
At lower levels (1-5) even a lone Azuridae can prove to be a strong adversary, and their powers multiply in groups via Psionic Synergy, to the extent of using new, more powerful abilities, such as being able to stun and chill the target, it's a good idea to try and separate them to weaken their power output first, before directly confronting them. The psionic capabilities of a single Azuridae are limited to Neural Overload.

It is not recommended to jump into a fight with more then one without adequate protection and offenses, a high player level and strong armour are recommended strongly.

When a player chooses to fight them it is recommended to use a close offensive, trying to force the Azuridae to fight with its pincers, as this form of attack is a lot weaker then their psionic powers.

Description
Stygian Coins, also known as Charons are the most common currency around south Underrail. They were first introduced as the currency of Junkyard and they're still mainly used there, but they're also accepted as currency in the South Gate Station. A stygian coin has a base trading value of 30, making them three times as valuable as SGS Credits.

Stygian coins are used just like SGS credits and other currency items, in that you can exchange them for weapons, ammo, etc. Currency items are always valued at their base trading value, without any trader's price modifier.

You can exchange SGS credits to Stygian coins at Colton in Junkyard docks. The exchange rate for 1 Stygian coin is currently 10 SGS credits per 1 coin.
Siphoners are essentially blood sucking frog-like creatures that can be found in the underground lakes and streams, waiting for their unsuspecting victims to come close to the water before pouncing on them.
Their basic attack applies anticoagulation debuff, which reduces all healing effects, prolongs bleeds and increases the effectiveness of their blood sucking attack which, as you might have guessed, transfers your health to them.
They also have head ramming attack that imbalances you and has a chance to stun you as well.

At lower levels (1-5) even a lone Azuridae can prove to be a strong adversary, and their powers multiply in groups via Psionic Synergy, to the extent of using new, more powerful abilities, such as being able to stun, freeze AND poison the player, it's a good idea to try and separate them to weaken their power output first, before directly confronting them.

Also their abilities, even when solo, are stronger when around Mindshrooms, be cautious adventurers!
Auto-Turrets are stationary defense guns that attack any threats within range according to their programming. They have true-sight, so stealth is useless against them.

Fighting tactics
Sufficient hacking skill may yield opportunities to reprogram auto-turrets to attack the hacker's enemies or shut them down completely.

* Since they have rather high damage threshold, weapons that deal large amounts of damage at once work best for destroying them.

* In combat, armor-piercing W2C ammunition or EMP weaponry provides best results against auto-turrets.

* Since they cannot move, a mobile character can safely take potshots at them, retreat behind a corner and repeat as necessary.

* It is possible to completely outrange auto-turrets with sniper rifles.
The most basic security robot model seen in Underrail.

Description
Sentry Bots, also known as wheeled bots, are autonomous defense robots that patrol an area, respond to threats reported by security cameras and can roam around before returning to their patrol route. They will attack any perceived threats within their range.

Tactics
Fighting
They are nasty combat encounters, usually patrolling in groups and they have nasty tricks such as melee-range stuns and flashbangs at their disposal, in addition to their guns. Even a single sentry bot can prove to be fatal, especially at lower levels.

* Since they have rather high damage threshold, weapons that deal large amounts of damage at once (e.g. high-caliber guns or sledgehammers) work best for destroying them.

* Armor-piercing W2C ammunition, EMP weaponry such as EMP Grenades, Shock Bolts or EMP Mines placed within their path provide the best results against sentry bots.

* JHP ammunition and weapons that incur extra resistance on target should be avoided.

Avoiding
Sometimes sentry bots prove to be too much to be taken on in direct combat as a low-level character with poor equipment. They can be avoided either by stealthing past them or finding alternative routes such as ventilation shafts or lockpicking locked doors.

If all that fails, it is possible to lure them into a specific location by causing camera alarms and flanking the bots while they move in to investigate.

Security Cameras are a common sight in the underground installations of Underrail. Some of them are automated and can cause alarms without anyone watching them.

Description
Optical cameras mounted on walls and connected to a security system. They have lights which change color with their mode.

Automated security cameras have three distinct operational modes:

* green - They slowly rotate 180 degrees on their pivots, scanning for hostiles. Full rotation taking about 15 seconds.
* yellow - After seeing a hostile, a camera tries to track its target and confirm the enemy sighting. This takes a few seconds. If the hostile doesn't quickly move out of the camera's field of view, the camera will confirm the enemy sighting;
* red - The camera alerts nearby Sentry Bots and possibly others to the initial sighting location and continues to track its target.
Cameras return to normal unalarmed state a few seconds after a sighting has passed from their view.

Tactics
Cameras can see through Stealth Mode, but you can still sneak past them if you avoid entering their field of vision while they are in normal mode.

Security cameras can be attacked and destroyed before they go into alarm state, but this will still summon the defenses to the camera's location. All methods that work against mechanical enemies work well against cameras as well. They don't have much HP and will usually be destroyed in a couple of hits/shots.

Also, wherever there are multiple cameras, there will usually also be a security control room somewhere nearby. From a control room, the player can watch the cameras and sufficient hacking skill may yield opportunities to disable them or hack into other security systems.

Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat. It's inspired by western RPG classics such as Fallout, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights and System Shock 2.

Story
The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught amidst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as they secretly but violently struggle for the Humanity's last gem of hope.

While there is a greater, sort of background plot that concerns the nature of time, the game is largely about the Underrail itself - its inhabitants, politics, strife, dangers, mysteries, as well as the player's place within all this.

Features
* Great character customization possibilities through stats, skills, feats, items and more that allows for many different play-styles
* Tactical turn based combat that utilizes weapons, energy shields, grenades, psi abilities and more
* Vast underground world to explore: city states, abandoned building complexes, natural caverns, secret areas and more
* Elaborate item crafting system.

Trivia
* During early development, Underrail was called Timelapse Vertigo

Background
He seems to have deep insight of the various creatures and other denizens of Underrail. He spends his old days mostly in the crossroad watchpost located just outside South Gate Station cave entrance.

Player interactions
Jonas can help the player with his knowledge of the dangers and creatures lurking in Underrail. He trades various items he has scavenged around and his prices are somewhat cheaper than what most other traders offer.

Quests
* Find Old Jonas's watch: Jonas wants you to retrieve his old digital watch he lost while scavenging around South Gate Outposts.

Hadrian Tanner is one of the councilors of South Gate Station.

Background
Tanner, along with Gorsky and Vera Hale form South Gate Station's ruling council. They are the leaders of the South Gaters community. They each have their own specialties and responsibilities, and Tanner seems to be in charge of testing and admitting new citizens to the station. The player is one such recently admitted citizen who passed Tanner's tests.

Player interactions
The game starts with you doing missions under Tanner's command while waiting for earthquake repairs to be completed in and around the station. The main quest line of the current alpha version 0.1.9.1 ends when you complete his find the drill circuit board mission. Completing this mission will allow the South Gaters to clear out the earthquake damage from the south metro tunnel, which will likely unlock metro travel in future versions. Finding the drill parts also frees some of SGS's T.N.T. Charge reserves from the earthquake repair work, allowing the player to purchase them from Lucas in SGS armory and explore other earthquake-blocked passages.

Quests
* Introduction: as soon as the game starts, you are to report into Tanner's office.
* Retake the outposts: Your first big task in the SGS is to capture some forlorn outposts in the cave tunnels beneth South Gate station.
* Hopper round up: While waiting for earthquake repairs, Tanner has the player get acquainted with SGS's food production by aiding Big Bret.
* Gorsky's task: While waiting for earthquake repairs, Gorsky's team has moved into GMS compound to secure their vault.
* Find the drill circuit board: Meeting difficulties in re-opening the south metro tunnel after the earthquake, Tanner opts to have the player look for a part to fix a broken drill machine.

Loot
He doesn't carry anything pickpocketable, but the containers in his office usually contain some good loot. You will need quite high level of stealth skill to steal from them due to Tanner's high perception and detection.

Quotes
* "Congratulations once again playername and welcome aboard. You scored highly on our tests; no small feat that."

Traps are items that can be placed on the ground while out of combat and are detonated by anyone who walks over them. To place traps, the player needs some points in the traps skill, determined by the effectiveness of the traps.

Trap detection chance is based on both Perception and Traps skill. The player can try to disarm any traps that have been detected, or detonate them with grenades or other AoE weapons.

There are two formulas for trap detection value, the greater of the two for the particular character is used.
*"Pure detection" equals 75% of your regular detection value.
*"Hybrid detection" equals 50% of your regular detection value plus 75% of your effective trap skill.

Hence the characters with high trap skill also have better chance to detect traps.

List of traps in the game:
*Acid Blob Trap
*EMP Mine
*Frag Mine
*Frag Mine Mk II

Overview of the derived statistics in Underrail as seen in the Combat Stats menu and some miscellanous information that wouldn't fit elsewhere.

Action and Movement Points
*All characters have 50 AP. They can be used for any action, including moving. Most actions consume AP, but there are exceptions, eg. Special Tactics
::Wearing armor without meeting its strength requirement will reduce your action points.
*Movement Points are affected by Agility, Encumberance and some Feats. Movement Points can only be used for moving. Character base movement points equal 30 + extra 3 points for every point in agility above 5. Some creatures, such Dogs and Spawn, have natural bonus to movement points.

*If you initiate combat out of real-time mode, you will not get the first turn after your initial action.
::Thus, it is always better to move into turn-based mode first, and then perform your actions to initiate combat.

*It is not known how combat sequence works.
Resistances
*All characters have Damage Resistance and Damage Threshold for each damage type. Resistance is a percentage reduction, whilst threshold is a flat number reduction. Only the greater of the two reductions will be applied against any one attack, not both.

Shielding
*All damage sources have an Impact Speed. Shields can absorb certain amounts of damage based on its impact speed. Slower impact speeds are generally better against shielded enemies.
