Riot Gear is an armor suit with medium to high armor penalty. Like Tactical Vest, it consists of a vest and a ballistic panel and can use various optional overcoat fabrics. All riot armors have 100% increased Mechanical damage threshold against firearms and 75% increased Mechanical damage resistance and threshold against melee attacks.
A riot shield can also be a part of riot armor suit. Riot shields provide 35% chance to block some Mechanical damage from melee attacks. Carrying a shield limits the wearer to one-handed weapons and depending on the shield material, a strength requirement is added and armor penalty is increased.
Riot gear with shield can be used without meeting its minimal strength requirement, but doing so will reduce your APs.

Variants
Carrier vest
Type and quality of carrier vest used determines secondary bonuses of the armor suit.
Biohazard Riot Gear — Increases Bio damage resistance/threshold
Insulated Riot Gear — Increases Cold damage resistance/threshold, lightest of the vests
Galvanic Riot Gear — Increases Electricity damage resistance/threshold, +10 to armor penalty
Regenerative Riot Gear — Provides health regeneration when powered, +10 to armor penalty
Sturdy Riot Gear — Increases health
Ballistic panel
No visual difference. Type and quality of ballistic panel used determines the Mechanical damage resistance/threshold and base armor penalty of the armor suit.
- Reinforced Fabric — 20% armor penalty, provides both mechanical damage resistance and threshold,
- Laminated Fabric — 20% armor penalty, lower mechanical resistance, but higher threshold
- Super Steel Sheet — 30% armor penalty, similar to laminated fabric, but also increases mechanical damage resistance threshold against knife attacks
Shield plate
Type and quality of the shield plate material determines damage blocked per melee attack. The numbers in brackets represent the modified armor penalty with the feat Armor Sloping.
Steel Shield — 5 minimal strength, +23(15)% to armor penalty
Tungsten Steel Shield — 6 minimal strength, +26(17)% to armor penalty
TiChrome Shield — 5 minimal strength, +18(11)% to armor penalty
Super Steel Shield — 5 minimal strength, +16(10)% to armor penalty
Burrower Carapace Shield — 4 minimal strength, +12 to armor penalty
Psi Beetle Carapace Shield — 4 minimal strength, +7 to armor penalty, increases psionic skills and decreases psi costs
Overcoat fabric
Optional overcoat fabrics give additional bonuses. Heavier fabrics also increase armor penalty.
Antithermic Riot Overcoat — Increases Heat damage resistance/threshold, decreases Stealth
Black Riot Overcoat — Increases Stealth
Blast Riot Overcoat — Reduces damage taken from explosions, +15 to armor penalty
Kevlar Riot Overcoat — Further increases Mechanical damage threshold against bullets, +10 to armor penalty
