Experience
Experience points are the primary measurement of character progress in Underrail. There are two different experience systems, Classic and Oddity.
Character level
The maximum player character level is 25. Prior to version alpha 0.1.14.0, it was 20. In the release versions, there is no way to directly see the levels of non-player characters.
- Level does not directly affect most character's stats. The only stats partially derived from level are health, fortitude, resolve and detection.
- Characters gain a base ability point every 4 levels
- Characters gain 40 skill points every level
- Characters gain a feat point every 2 levels
- Fortitude, resolve and detection function like skills that get 4-5 points automatically invested into them each level. They get a bonus/penalty from their related base ability just like normal skills do.
- All NPCs have natural dodge and evasion bonus equal to their level.
Veteran levels
In Underrail: Expedition, player characters will be able to level past 25 and become a veteran character. To gain veteran levels, a character will require significantly more experience (both oddity and classical) than for regular levels.
The maximum veteran level is 30.
- Veteran levels do not increase any derived character stats
- Veterans no longer gain base ability points
- Veterans no longer gain skill points
- Veterans gain a feat point every level, and can also choose from Veteran feats

- Main article: Oddity XP System
In Oddity XP System, you gain experience by collecting oddities scattered across Underrail and by completing quests. Higher end oddities are found in progressively more dangerous and hard to access areas. No experience is granted for skill usage or killing, though some oddities are only dropped by creatures.
The experience needed to level up starts off linear with each level requiring 2 more experience than the former, but stops at 30 XP/level (at level 14).
