This common problem is technically called "Hyperpronation." Excessive Nerve Renew motion occurring between the talus(ankle bone) and calcaneus(heel bone.) Interestingly, as this happens, an amazing trait of this mechanical marvel occurs. This rigid support becomes flexible and is able to physically contour around its environment, adjusting for the slope, the rock, it stepped on. As the body continues to move over this flexible 'bag of bones,' the talus and calcaneus, passively scissor together in a new construct we call "Supination."

The flexibility of its surrounding joints rigidly disappear, passively culminating in the heel lifting from the ground and the toes to follow. This occurs thousand of times each day. It is no wonder that even a small deviation from a smooth gait pattern develops into a painful, symptomatic foot. Sometimes the foot is not even the point of complaint. The knee, the hip, back, can all start with problems in the foot.

The gait pattern, in the big picture, is often taken for granted. As already mentioned, it is a very complex 'simplicity' of life. This is quickly recognized by the slightest injury and pain. The iconic "No Pain, No Gain," does not apply when it comes to the foot. The foot is made up of muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves, vessels and skin.
