All that might be needed to implement a basic cover system, to enable more tactics is simply this:

Treat any object that even partially blocks a direct line between a target the same as you would a wall or door, except....That the object does not completely block an attack, it gives a base percentage of missing, say 30 or 40% across the board.

To keep it simpler, every blocking object would get the same cover percentage.

Stances would be really useful!

It adds a whole new dimension to combat.
If you want to see how in a turn based game, Metalheart Replicants Rampage puts it to great use.

The prone mode allows crawling, and some quests in that game require crawling under fences and into certain areas that are only accessible that way.

On the collectible journals, you don't have to divulge the whole history of the world.

You can add much flavor and history just by placing snippets of present day backgrounds, and paper or digital logs of various characters who inhabit the underrail society.


And a far as being to much work....Maybe you could, you know,m ask someone for help along those lines?

These are great ideas, and would enhance the stealth gameplay and add subdue elements increasing the variety of gameplay styles possible.
Other options might be the ability to hide subdued or defeated opponents so as to not incite hostility as long s the are moved out of view.

The LOS system is necessary, the game plays inconsistently without it. This should be on a list of things to do.
Stealth does not work properly nor intuitively right now, this would fix most issues with it.
