I love the game! Need help creating a character please.
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:41:13 am »
Hello gents. I saw this game because i beat fallout 1 and 2 and love the turn based isometric combat style.
Instantly bought it and played all the way till i got to turn in finding the old man's watch and i'm in love with the game i must say.

I chose the SMG cause who wouldn't want an SMG right? But there was no way for me to get ammo for it as i had no real money and the merchants are brutally tough.
The game itself is hard, but i love that it isn't easy mode for casuals. It only makes me want to play more.
I got discouraged with my character build and decided to roll a new character but can't stick with one. Theres so much to choose from, i figured i'd ask the community as no real guides are out there and i learned alot from lurking the forums but sadly, i just couldn't get the info i needed reading posts. I must have gone through the beginning 15 times so far and killed a few rathounds each time, but i must be missing something because they are raping me. This character did well against them until he ran out of ammo in his pistol. I could probably trade alot of the loot for more, but i really just wanna start over with a character i'm more confident in.

So heres my current build

str 7
dex 7
agi 5
con 7
will 3
int 3

Skills
Guns 20
Melee 15
Dodge 20
Evade 10
Lockpick 15
Traps 15
Mechanics 20
Tailoring 20
Mercantile 20

Feats
Aimed Shot
Hit and Run
Reckless

I was aiming for a Mercenary type dude who focuses on guns, but can do well with melee to save rounds if need be and has good utility and some crafting of relevant things.'
I'm just not sure how necessary stealth is to play a character like this, or how necessary psi powers are. I wasn't really interested in them so i didn't take any points in it.
Also what i need to know is how useful is moving during combat? Since movement points are separate from action points do you find yourself manuevering alot?  Absolutely any combat tips or help to get my started in the game is welcome, i really want to get into this game and get beyond activating the first power generator, but it is hard! Thanks!

Well, first of ingame tips:
Talk to everyone, visit everything in the start.
When you get out for the outpost quest, best get the rathound quest from agronomy as well.
Get's you a free crossbow + ammo, after all.
For the rathounds, if you run past them and close the wire doors behind you, you can shoot them with impunity.
Stealth certainly does help here.

The low int you have will definitely hamper crafting quite a bit, Intelligence, as a stat, is nearly only useful for making money and improving your equipment.
If you don't want to use PSI powers, you don't necessarily need will. Though getting some skill in one discipline can help; You get free training in thought control and metathermics after the quest, and even with very limited resources and low damage, slowing an opponent can be quite the boon.

I notice in your stats you didn't list perception. I suppose it's 8?
You have rather high dexterity, you might want to drop some points into grenades, just in case. What else is it good for, after all.

Movement in combat depends on what you have available.
Relocating can be very useful in every situation, but you'll see these situations when they crop up.
running away can be useful to deny superior enemies attacks, or lure them into traps. Keep in mind that moving reduces your accuracy with ranged weapons.
First person to give Styg Karma.

I hereby declare that I love the oddity system and am in favour of shop and carry limits.

Build suggestion from a minmax standpoint:

7 Strength (for Full Auto feat)
5 Dex
6 Agility (for Sprint feat)
5 Con
8 Perception (+2 from your first two stat levelups to get 10 just in time for the feat that requires it)
3 Will
6 Intelligence

Max:
Guns
Mechanics
Electronics
Hacking
Lockpick
Traps

Chemistry to 37 skill(after modifiers), for Frag grenades Mk IV(hexogen+TNT)

Anything else is optional. Stealth is good, so is tailoring. Biology can be useful in smaller amounts, suggest using points after reaching 37 chemistry skill here, but only if you take tailoring(main good use is making regenerative armor, and 20 ranks for the doctor feat).

Initial perk selection:
Sprint (superior to hit and run)
Aimed Shot

Assault rifles > SMGs, you'll want a 8.6mm marauder and a 12.7mm harbinger(sniper) eventually. Pistol/SMG feats are traps(including kneecap shot).

PS: Dodge/Evade aren't so useful because the best armors neuter them with their encumberance.

Thanks alot, i like that build. I appreciate the advice guys. It helped when i discovered the SGS credits were worth 10 each. So i thought i would need 1600 for a basic knife to help me deal with the rats but really i only needed 160.

I'll give it a try. Appreciate knowing only needing 37 chemistry. I may take stealth or i may take another utility. Appreciate leaving me some points to work with. This game is the bomb.

there is a set of targetable rocks in the area of the outposts... several. I've tried throwing HE nades at them... how do you destroy them?

What? I was under the impression that they led to the other outposts. Do i have to go through the caves with the crazy evil mind bugs to get to the other outposts?

EDIT: I just realized the switches turn on each station. I was under the impression that there were 5 generators, not 1 generator 5 switches.

if you want to min max, try this.

4 Strength (put your level up points here to get 6 for assault rifles and heavy snipers late game)
3 Dex
3 Agility
8 Con
10 Perception
8 Will
4 Intelligence

(4 is the baseline where it doesn't detract from your ability scores. Guns being the #1 thing you will do just get 10 per from the get go.)

Max:
Guns
Hacking
Lockpick

Tailoring/Mechanics to make 15+200% bullet vests

metathermics is op early game with cryokinesis doing essentially 4 instances of damage per round.

10 in traps for frag and he mines to cheeze tough enemies

Initial perk selection:
Conditioning
Aimed Shot
