Model Customization
« on: January 18, 2016, 09:16:52 pm »
Hi Styg I am sure you are busy with fixing bugs at the moment but could you implement some customization options for player chracter ?
It will be like Dead State or Shadowrun character creation but more basic version of it , only need to include a hair color and skin color tone selection .
I thinking everyone will like that . Thanks for this awesome game .

I second that. Also, if possible could you please make headgear has a visual change on the character, such as if the character is wearing a balaclava, the players can see it. It would be even better if the players can customize the armor itself.

Another suggestion is I wish you guys can make more animation, such as death animation or drinking animation.

Thanks for the great game, it is always something I dreamed of.  :D

I believe this kind of customizations are completely pointless and a waste of time. Showing gear changes is actually at least somewhat useful not just vanity stuff. And if the model changes with gear changes then your initial customizations won't even show.
Unless you go like Wasteland 2 for example which is so completely ridiculous that you can customize how you look but the gear you put on you doesn't show.

Not gonna happen, folks. The game is made with 2D sprites. There is neither time, nor budget for fancy combinations. For the very same reason we didn't get crawling animations, gore effects, additional weaponry such as shotguns, et cetera.

Different skin/hair colors are already in. It's pretty immersion-breaking when your character is always white even though there is a lot of black portraits to choose from.

They are in, but not for player character and all combatants.

Anyone wandering why doctor character never use weapons?
Or why some enemies can only use some subsets of weapons?

Each combination needs to get rendered and then converted to 2d.

This is also reason why modern games switched to 3d. It is easier to do thus kind if stuff.

Maybe when Modding support is availed, the fan-base will work on aesthetic feature-requests like this, while the real devs get on with content.

It might be just aesthetic, but I'd say it's still part of content.

Personally, I don't care about details such as every armor or weapon being displayed properly on the sprite model, but I do find it annoying if the sprite doesn't match the portrait at all. In an RPG, where other NPCs have proper avatars and only your character is a special snowflake who doesn't, it feels a bit immersion-breaking.

On the other hand, NPC portraits match character models pretty well.

That's what I meant by NPCs having proper avatars. It makes your character stand out like a sore thumb.

PS I don't expect the same level of detail as with NPCs, but I'd rather have some basic customization.

Well, as others have put it already, every combination of weapons and equipment needs to be rendered, with a few possible exceptions.
So it's really hard to add things at this point.
I'm not sure how much work it'd be to make a pass over all existing images with a program to replace a skincolour, but I err on the side of "too much right now".
Maybe for the next game.  ;)
First person to give Styg Karma.

I hereby declare that I love the oddity system and am in favour of shop and carry limits.

I second this, either more sprites maybe in an expansion, or to mitigate the fact metal armor only has one variation give the player the opportunity to colour it.
I think black metal armor would look cool.

I would be fine with just switching to different 2d sprites...
Self-proclaimed great cheater. Frequent game breaker. Liberator of limitations.

I think it was missed opportunity, when original sprites where made, that some system for color switching was not made (hair, elements of clothes).

Look for Baldurs Gate sprites, for example.
