Metathermics is a psi skill which allows to learn and use metathermics psi abilities effectively. Your effective skill level (the number shown in parentheses on Character Sheet S and in Combat Stats C) is used for combat calculations and other skill checks, but a certain base skill score is required to learn new psi abilities.

Details
Metathermics, also known as Thermal Control, is one of the disciplines of psi, along with Thought Control, Psychokinesis and Temporal Manipulation E. Metathermics are mainly offensive abilities which consist of attacks that deal Heat or Cold damage and their side effects, such as freezing targets. Cold abilities typically prevent the target from moving freely - sometimes even freezing it completely - whereas fire abilities apply a burning and/or a fear effect on targets.
There is only one Metathermics teacher in the game: Quinton, biologist at South Gate Station, who can teach the player up to four metathermics abilities. However, psionic mentors can be found throughout the game and teach many more abilities.
