The Expedition is a research mission in the Black Sea for the University of Dis and led by professor Edward Oldfield. Its purpose is to understand the history of the New Frontier Technologies in the Black Sea.

According to Professor Oldfield: Our mission here is to unearth history. To piece together the events that had led to NFT inhabiting this place following the Descent, to learn what happened during their reign and what their technological achievements were, what they'd discovered. Not only that, but also what happened in subsequent years, after they had... ceased to be. Biocorp slowly abandoned the Black Sea after making sure their enemies would not rise again, but we don't know why. They never exploited any of the NFT achievements here nor expanded into the area themselves. Why? This place has been shunned ever since, and there has to be a reason.

Black Sea Expedition Camp:

Raids

The Expedition base is occasionally assaulted by the Sormirbaeren, up to 5 times total depending on the progress you have made. Spending enough time far away from the vicinity of the Expedition camp will cause a raid to start. Note: the raid timer doesn't tick when player is not in the Black Sea or when inside a dungeon, such as Crimson Meadow Horticulture Center.

  • 1st raid: Immediately after joining the Expedition.
  • 2nd raid: Some time after the previous raid
  • 3rd raid: After player implants microhip in their hand at the Lemurian Health Center.
  • 4th raid: Some time after the previous raid
  • 5th raid: Some time after the previous raid

Each raid has a randomized selection of enemy types, but contains increasingly higher numbers of not just natives but also elite enemies such as Skærder and Sppæter. Difficulty affects both the number of raiders as well as how early the elite enemies appear, on DOMINATING the first raid will contain elite enemies. Difficulty also affects the number of available sec-troopers that defend the camp, with 40 sec-troopers on Normal and 30 on Hard difficulty and above.

Assaulting the Grim Jetters without killing most of the pirates, or breaking in and rescuing the professor without negotiating with Captain Grim will trigger a unique pirate raid afterwards. Foiling their plans to kidnap the professor ahead of time will not cause a raid.

Once the professor's kidnapping event is resolved (regardless of the path), named NPCs (in order: Marcus, Ladelman, Doctor Savage and Chief Briggs) can join the beach defense during a native invasion if the number of sec-troopers is too low.

The True Mission

After a certain point in the expedition, Oldfield will reveal the primary purpose of it. Before you arrived, he learned from a bit of recovered data that besides the Black Sea(or Lemuria, as NFT called it), NFT was believed to have settled in three other places; Atlantis, Horizon and an unnamed third location. Other than their names, everything else about them, including their exact whereabouts and current status is unknown. Oldfield also learned that the NFT personnel from all four locations were supposed to meet at a certain point in time, that a special device, an ACoNR, was designed to help with that endeavor, and that one of these devices was supposed to be somewhere in the Black Sea, as well as hints about some sort highly advanced terraforming technology.

Hoping to find the ACoNR and use it to learn more about NFT, the Black Sea, the other three sites, and the terraforming tech, and knowing that other groups such as the Core City Oligarchs and the Protectorate would eventually learn what he learned and try to use the ACoNR for their own ends, Oldfield got together a team of researchers and assistants, hired Aegis Incorporated and some guides and laborers from South Underrail and got an expedition together to comb over the NFT ruins for relicts, tech, data and hopefully, the ACoNR.
