South Gate Outposts is a location in Lower Underrail.
Description
A vast cavernous area, sprawling multiple map areas, containing 5 small outposts with electric power and some smaller tunnels beneath them. These outposts used to be controlled by Omega Station's border guard. They were left abandoned after SGS-Omega war.
This area is accessible from Crossroad Watch. There are some tunnels leading to caves from the east outpost, but they are blocked by rocks that can be cleared with TNT Charges later on. This area may contain entrances to random dungeons.
Areas
South outposts
- On the north side there are some breakable rocks, leading to Lower Caves, Caves 11.
- The outpost in the NW corner
- The door can be opened with 10 Lockpicking (but the outpost can be reached through the tunnel using the trap door in the other outpost of the area, without requiring the Lockpicking skill)
- Has a trap door that can be spotted with 10 (or less?) perception. It leads to the South Tunnels area, linking both outposts
- Has a power switch for the quest Retake the outposts. The flux controller must first be used on the Power Generator in the West outposts area before it can be activated.
- Has shelves containing a Border Guard Orders oddity
- The outpost in the NE corner
- Has a trap door that can be spotted with 6 Perception. It leads to the South Tunnels area, linking both outposts
- Has a power switch for the quest Retake the outposts. The flux controller must first be used on the Power Generator in the West outposts area before it can be activated.
- Has a locker containing a Border Guard Orders oddity

- Empty tunnel linking both outposts from the South outposts area
West outposts
- The central outpost
- Has shelves containing a Border Guard Orders oddity
- Has the Power Generator for the quest Retake the outposts. Using the Flux Controller will reactivate it, allowing you to unlock the Power switches in all the other outposts
- The NE outpost
- Has a box containing a Border Guard Orders oddity
- Has a power switch for the quest Retake the outposts. The flux controller must first be used on the Power Generator in the West outposts area before it can be activated.
- Has a box requiring 15 Hacking
East outpost
- On the north side there are some breakable rocks, leading to Lower Caves, Caves 9.
- The eastern path of the area leads to a trap door that can be spotted with 8 Perception

- The door can be opened with 12 Lockpicking (but the outpost can be reached through the East tunnel using the trap door in the east side of the area, without requiring the Lockpicking skill)
- Has a power switch for the quest Retake the outposts. The flux controller must first be used on the Power Generator in the West outposts area before it can be activated.
- Has a trap door that can be spotted with 7 Perception. It leads to the East Tunnel area, linking the outpost to the tunnels
- Has shelves containing a Border Guard Orders oddity
- Has shelves containing an Omega ID Card oddity and a Blueprint: Leather Armor
- Has a box requiring 15 Hacking
East tunnel
- Links the outpost from East outpost area to the outside and to the Northwest tunnel' area
- Has a rock pile to the south that can be climbed with Agility, leading to a small area with:
- A rubble pile containing a Trilobite Fossil oddity
- 2 mindshrooms
Northwest outpost
- One of the rathounds has the Old Watch for the quest Find Old Jonas's watch
- M'lan Ratula and his 2 rathounds will likely attack unless you can intimidate him
- Has a junk pile containing a Chew Toy oddity
- Has two boxes requiring 17 Hacking each
- Has a power switch for the quest Retake the outposts. The flux controller must first be used on the Power Generator in the West outposts area before it can be activated.
- Has an elevator leading to the Northwest tunnel area, but the power switch needs to be turned on before it can be used
Northwest tunnel
- Links the Northwest outpost and the East tunnel areas
- Accessing the outpost from the tunnel is not possible until power has been restored to the outpost
- Has a locker containing a Border Guard Orders oddity
- Has a locker requiring 14 Lockpicking and which contains an Omega ID Card oddity
- Has a respawning Mindshroom
Enemies
Rathounds are a very common sight in this area, often met in packs of a few individuals. The chainlink fences found around the outposts can be easily used against them by any ranged characters.
A single crazed hermit, M'lan Ratula, and his trained pet rathounds, Litsko and Gritsko, can also be found in the largest outpost to the northwest.
Quests
One of your first larger missions is retaking the outposts for South Gate Station.
